Question about 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport

1 Answer

I'm having problems with my 96 jeep Cherokee sport. When I try to start it it sounds like it has problems turning over a few times then it will fire up. I put a new battery in it, checked the alternator and they are fine. I also installed new battery cables, and then it was fine for about a week. I got into it yesterday morning and try to start and there was not cranking or turning in the engine. I was thinking it was my starter, whats wrong any suggestions??

I would tend to agree its very possible you have a bad starter. You could remove it and have it tested. Most of your local auto parts stores do this for free.

I just removed it, I kind of jumped the gun and picked up a starter yesterday, but I don't wanna risk putting it in and that not being the problem. Looks like I'll be taking it in tomorrow. Thanks for your help.

sounds like your cv joint is bad . Have it replaced sooner rather than later as when it fails, you'll be stuck somewhere and will need a tow.

Park jeep overnight and now it won't start, changed fuel filter and relay checked fuel pump which worked fine, the problem is that it will crank over but that's it, you don't hear the fuel pump kick on,...

sometimes the neutral safety switch goes out and thus it doesn't start... I had that go out in my 96 jeep cherokee sport 4x4... changed the fuel pump out and then found out... I had it changed so I don't know how to do that part.... anyway hope that helps

96 Jeep Cherokee Sport Hard Starting

The Engine coolant temp sensor would ABSOLUTELY cause a hard start, but don't guess get the codes check again at Auto_Zone to make sure. Another cause of that kind of hard start is a dirty throttle body/ intake manifold. Use INTAKE cleaner and a rag clean the intake esp[eciall in the throttle body area. Good Luck
