Question about 2001 Lexus RX 300

1 Answer

I have a rather loud squeaky noise coming from my serp belt or tensioner when the car is cold and 1st starts, it subsides dramaticly after a minute. Do you believe it's either issue I just mentioned, or a bigger problem? It's a 01' RX300, w/ 120k, w/o 100k timing belt replacement

My serpentine belt is a little bit loose. Do I tighten the belt using the tensioner or should I use the pry the alternator forward method?

The tensioner is an automatic device. You DONT Adjust it. Sounds like you need a new belt and probably should replace the tensioner. Tensioner have a limited lifespan usually 75000 to 100000 miles

WHAT IS THE LIKELY CAUSED OF A LOUD SQUEALING NOISE COMING FROM THE ALTERNATOR SERPENTINE DRIVE BELT SYSTEM ? IS IT THE ALTERNATOR OR SERPENTINE BELT?

serpentine belt is getting old and hard and the cold weather was causing it to slip
check belt condition ( small cracks across the grooves = scrap and get a new one) and check tension

Loud noise burning smell

Most likely a belt problem or a worn out tensioner. You left off the year, make, model and engine so it's a guessing gamet. Read this post on how to track down the source of noise

Hi Utiila, The problem you describe is most likely from a belt and it is not uncommon. The belt may be loose or need replacement. Regards John

The serpentine belt squeaks. I'll check the belt & the tensioner. Anything else I should look for?

The Corolla's has a hydralic belt tensioner. When you replace the serp belt you need to buy a factory Toyota belt. The reason why the after-market reproduction belts are slightly long or short. This
will either cause a squeaky belt problem or a over adjusted belt condition which could burn up one of your engines accessories (p/s pump, alt. etc.)
