The starting system consists of:

  • starter motor
  • starter switch, part of the ignition switch
  • digital transmission range (TR) sensor (automatic transmission-equipped vehicles)
  • starter motor solenoid relay switch
  • starter solenoid
  • starter drive
When you turn your key to start your engine, it just clicks, right? If so, more than likely this is due to a bad battery. Even though your battery may appear to be fully charged, it may have a dead cell, or worse. If you get a jump, does the vehicle start? If so, replace your battery.

Possible sources of the problem if the engine does not crank or the relay clicks:
  1. Battery
  2. Starter motor
  3. Starter motor relay
  4. Ignition switch
  5. Damaged fuse
  6. Anti-theft system
  7. Circuitry

An alternator doesn't have anything to do with starting, but has to do with keeping your battery charged. A click could be from low battery power, a bad connection, or a bad starter solenoid. Your battery voltage should be around 12.5 volts, and stay above 11 volts or so while starting. If it drops lower, you may have a bad battery. You can get batteries tested at almost any parts store. If you are also not charging due to a bad alternator, you will need to get the charging system tested to verify this.

A "ticking" noise from the engine is usually a loose valve rocker arm which would need to be adjusted by someone who knows what they are doing. If you are not using the reccomended weight engine oil that could be the cause.

How do i tighten a lifter on a 2003 ford expedition

-You should have some one know about car to do this. This is valve lifter. Some car can't adjust, have to use shim.
-Why it make noise...? Because its contact worn out and too much
clearance that why.

Good luck

Ford expedition noise

humming could be the motor turning round but not engaging with the flywheel. you can check this by hitting the starter with a spanner a few times. if it starts up after you have a sticking solenoid. had to do this a few times my self to get engine started. replace starter as soon as possible if it works. usually happens if you not driven car for awhile.. or you do a lot of starting and small trips.

If its a grinding noise, it could be the starter or the flywheel gear.
