I don't know exactly what transmission that is but I will guess and say that it is located on the drivers side of the transmission , about one inch in diameter with a plug in that has three round prongs. If that is not it, you might want to re-post the problem.

How to switch 4 wheel drive back to 2 wheel drive in my 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee

that is because you have Part time 4wd? (what do you have)?
and must not drive on pavement free of ice.
its now winding up the drive train, bad for it too.

drive, to dirt, sand, gavel or grass and shift out of 4wd.
or jack up 1 tire, and same,
one tire must be on slippery surface. at least.

http://www.rubicon-trail.com/4WD101/driveline-bind.html

this happens on all PT 4wd
or using LOCK on AWD. dont.

I have a 93 jeep grand cherokee laredo it has 4all time neutral and 4lo should i keep it in 4all time all the time or does that ruin it

Yes, Your Jeep is what is known as a Quadra-Trac. This type of cherokee is an all wheel drive model. 4 wheel all time is for everyday driving, Neutral completely dissconects the drive train from the transmission and will not move at all. 4 wheel low is more for off road conditions where traction is compromised. 4 wheel low should NEVER be used at speed above 15 miles an hour.

To the guy above: 4 wheel drive is designed for low end pulling power and safer handling on slippery road conditions. 4 wheel drive has NOTHING to do with how fast you go or how fast you stop. Don't post a comment if you clearly don't know the correct information.

My 93 jeep grand cherokee service 4wd switch is on. what does this mean ?

Hey there, The driver info center in the 93 grand cherokee's is notorious for this message. This switch is on the transfer case and its only purpose is to tell that display what 4 wheel drive mode you are in (eg. 2 wheel, 4 wheel high, 4 wheel low, etc.) This can mean the switch bad but is USUALLY cause by a short in the display module itself. This will not affect anything on your Jeep. It is merely for driver information only. This is a very common problem and if you have a 93 in which the display is working at all your are lucky. They are very bad about going completely out over time.

I just bought a 2004 grand cherokee V8 for my son. It has 4wd but the stick slides easily between 4wd all the time, Neutral and I'm wondering if that means it's not working? The whole point of buying was...

Not sure what you mean by "4wd all the time, Neutral".
But I can tell you how it's supposed to operate.

The three modes are 2wd, 4wd high and 4wd low. When switching between 2wd and 4wd high it makes no difference whether the Jeep is moving or in neutral. The only condition that needs to be obseved when switching from 2 to 4 high is the speed of the Jeep. It should not be done above 45mph.
The switch from 4wd high to 4wd low is a different animal. The Jeep must be stopped and in neutral. Also you should be aware that it is not a pleasant sound or feel when moving from high to low so you should worry to much about the lowed junking sound.
At times it may even be necessary to put the lever back to the high position and move the Jeep a couple feet to align gears before it goes into low.

This is the reason for the relative ease when switching from 2wd to 4wd high.
There is an art to switching from 2wd to 4wd high then to 4wd low. Once your son becomes familiar with the Jeep and begins using the different modes it will become easier.
I would like to add one more piece of advice. After building Jeeps for over 25 years and owning several I have found that 8 out of 10 times that 4wd low is used, it's used incorrectly or not needed at all. It's a good idea to find someone who has experience with 4wd to give a bit of instruction on how it should be used. Especially in the mountains.
Let me know if you need any clarification on anything.
I hope this helps.

while moving about 2-5 mph, shift your transmission into neutral but keep the vehicle rolling, then move the transfer case shift from 4HI to 2HI.
