If the transmission is a 700r4, it could be the governor gear which is located on the side rear and have about a three inch cap with a snap retainer. If its not and you re-post the problem with the type of transmission, someone will probably have a solution.

1997 jeep Cherokee 4.0. Transmission does fine then after running for a few won't shift until 3.5 rpm then shift smoothly then can Shift manual and does fine like that.

Valve body problems. When engine heat starts to build in the fluid and metal parts inside the transmission, the valve body expands which will cause pressure problems.

What makes a 700r4 trans go int reverse ok but then pause before going into 1st gear

What is the year make and model of the vehicle? The problem could be a dirty filter or low fluid level. 82-86 700r4's without the auxiliary valve body weren't all that great at Garage Shifts (P to D to R, or P to R etc) In 87 and later models the auxiliary valve body addition corrected this problem and also added what's called an Abuse Valve. Abuse as if you needed to rock the vehicle stuck in a mud hole, it made the engagement to D to R and R to D much quicker.

2001 Isuzu Trooper 4wd automatic trans. It will shift ou of 1st at about 20 mph into 2nd then loses power, rpm's drop until it slows to about 10mph then down shifts back to 1st. Any ideas why?

Sounds to me that your transmission is put itself into what is call (Limp Mode). This happens when the transmission fluid in the trans hydraulic valve body located on the bottom and in the trans pan are not within the parameters of the transmission computer. You can remove the trans pan and gasket to check for metallic material in the bottom of the pan. There is normally a strong magnet in the pan catch the material so I can't move freely through the transmission itself. It only takes a very small piece of foreign material to stop the flow of the valve body fluid. I would first take it to somewhere that had a automotive diagnostic scan tool that can read transmission codes to see if there are any active codes. Next you can drop the transmission pan yourself and look for material in it. Basically do a visually inspection and service the transmission fluid, gasket, and filter. Remember, all a automatic transmission is a extremely complicated fluid pump. If its pumping trans fluid properly it's probably working just fine. Been when the trans fluid gets hot, scorched, and stops moving. It will not work. Hope this helps

My truck don't shift. Has one forward and reverse. It is a 2500 1992.

Check transmission governor which is a gear driven metering device for the valve body. Its the old school speed sensor.Remove governor and inspect for stripped gears or stuck valves. This fluid circuit is critical for trans upshift...also check TV cable at the carburetor....this is the old school throttle position sensor for the trans control valve body.

Code p1870

My 1999 blazer LS 4WD had the hard upshift 1/2 and the P1870 code. I purchased the improved valve body, sep plate and all gaskets and small filter screens that are on the sep plate. I purchased everything from a transmission shop selling these kits on ebay and came with FULL instructions. Prior to the new valve body installation I had the tranny flushed at Jiffy Lube. The old fluid did not smell burnt but was a little dark and I wanted to make sure I had clean fluid prior to replacing the valve body. My son in law and I did the job * tranny in vehicle " in about two hours. I have not had a hard upshift nor any codes in 2,000 miles. I had taken it into a dealership and was quoted 1,900.00 to repair the transmission.
I paid 110.00 for the complete valve body kit on ebay 12/6/09.
I would remove the inspection plate and look at the tork converter, smell your tranny fluid and if it doesn't smell like a camp fire... don't throw your dollars away to a dealer or transmission shop!
This is a very common problem.... I would guess that most are caused from not having your tranny serviced! Keep that fluid clean and the filter fresh !!

Is there a ''stick'' to check on the level of transmission fluid in vehicle? Where's is the level stick for the transmission fluid? is there one? When Do we change the Transmission Oil on Car and Where is...

1st off your trans doesn't have a dip stick, it is a sealed transmission, to check level you need to have the dealer hook up a scan tool and then verify trans fluid temperature is at at least 175-185 degrees for correct level check, then there is a inspection plug they access on the top of the trans for a level check. The fluid and filter should be changed around 60,000 miles

I have a 1999 Ram B 1500 Van, auto transmission, 5.9 L engine.
Same problem, trans hesitates in 2-3 upshift, sometimes 1-2
to 2-3 upshift. Posts trouble code P1756 - Transmission Govenor pressure too low at below 15 to 20 Psi. Transmission pump shot or valve body leak stops trans from reaching proper pressure to shift, which is minimum 15 Psi.
Either trans is leaking in valve body, valve is stuck, shift solenoid on valve body is sticking, or pump is shot.

96 Ford Contour CD4E Auto Trans.

The item referred to needing adjustment in the previous reply is called the MLP (manual lever position sensor). It tells the computer electronically that the car is in P, R, N, D, 2,1 (depending on the gear selector) It also allows the car to only be started in P and N for safety.
If it is out of adjustment, the sensor is misaligned with it's reference point on the gear selector rod, which goes into the trans case and pushes/pulls a rod that moves the selector piston/valve. The valve will be in the right place but the computer will say other wise and it controls the shifting with the solenoids.
{MLP transaxle function: determion desired gear and electronic pressure control (EPC) pressure:
Symptoms: Harsh engagements and firm shift feel, engine may not crank, may downshift to a lower gear, 2nd or 3rd gear operation, transaxle not inicating the proper gear, no 4th gear operation. no manual first gear.}
Another point of interest is the EPC (electronic pressure control)solenoid inside the black side cover.
Failed OFF-maximum EPC pressure, harsh engagements and harsh shifts.

Another possible issue may just worn out clutches if the unit has high mileage or maybe verify fluid level and recent change of fluid. The filter is inside unit and trans has to be removed to change, some Hondas are like this too.
