Disconnet the battery for 2 hours. It will clear codes and the KAM, Keep Alive Memory. But then you will have to go through drive cyces for about 50 miles so all of the systems say "Ready" before they will retest.

Why did it fail? Was it just that some systems were not ready?

Or did you have DTC codes?

I have a ford f-250 6.0

I suggest you Web search your term, "2005 Ford 6.0L EGR delete kit" and "2005 Ford 6.0L California cylinder heads". If you plan on using the truck in California, it will need to be Certified for California Emissions. This may be why the truck was cheap.

The truck can be used in other States. Some States do not have Emissions testing. Because of California Emissions equipment, many people view these Vehicles as inferior. They often do not perform as well daily, and durability may be compromised because of the added California Emissions hardware(Software too).

Try Rock Auto, call them about your situation. Used heads from wrecked trucks can work too. Car-parts.com can be helpful.

California illegal catalytic converter ford expedition 2003

Because the cat that is approved for California is "finer tuned" than the other 49 states. California emission standards are the toughest in the country, so many engine and emission parts are made just for those standards.

What should I do to get my 87 ford econline straight 6 ready for a smog?

Before the emission test make sure your air filter is clean, change the oil, and make sure your engine is in tune. Worn spark plugs are the #1 emission item that will usually fail the car. Make sure the check engine light works properly. To check the light, turn on the ignition, the light should come on for a second or two and then go off. After the engine has started the light should remain off. If your light is on they will fail the car.

Improper fuel combustion; need to pass emissions test

Sounds like you need to replace your oxygen sensors.  If you have a four cylinder I think you only have one oxygen sensor and the six cylinder I know has 2.  You can check that out at your local parts store.  Anyway, the oxygen sensor helps the computers in your car make sure that you are getting the correct amount of fuel and air during combustion thus controlling your emissions.  I would think that if you haven't replace these in a while that is what is probably keeping you from passing your test.  Change the oxygen sensors and put a bottle of good fuel injector cleaner in a full tank of gas and you should be good to go.  I would suggest Greased Lightening fuel injector cleaner that can be purchased at Napa and O'Reilley Auto Parts.  Let me know if you have any other questions.  Thanks for an honest rating and for using FixYa!

It sounds as though you might have a sticking lifter. Try doing a compression test, or performing a cylinder leakdown check to see what your readings are.
