Question about 2002 Toyota Avalon
I have a 98 Toyota as well and when the same thing happened to me it was because the grooves on our key had been worn down. The locksmith said that it was a common problem with this make a model and I've recently discovered that a new ignition system or something like that was introduced that year. It really sucks because to replace the key is not cheap and, unfortunately for me, opting to get one for around $60 from a locksmith instead of paying more by going to a dealership has resulted in me having to go get another key made...not even a year later...either because of the I unreliability of the off-brand microchip, or because we did not pay to have the locksmith refresh the computer on the car. So if it is the key, and you have the money to spend, I suggest getting a new key at the dealership.

Make sure there isn't a strong pressure against the locking mechanism. Try turning the wheel one way or the other. If it goes back to where it was, it may be that the car was shut off and the key removed with the pressure against the wheel. If so, pull the wheel a little bit (whichever way it will move) then try turning the key. If that is the problem, it will unlock and you'll be able to start the car normally. Good luck!
