While there are a series of products you could purchase to remove stripped bolts I would go with a large vise-grips. It will lock onto any surface and increase you chances of removing the bolt. I would suggest buying a new oil plug first so you can replace it when you finish your oil change.

here is a picture of said tool

If you take a straight blade screwdriver and try to get it into where gasket meets pan (below oil plug) and apply small amounts of pressure while undoing plug that will get plug started for removal.

If you got clearance, pull the oil pan

Then silver braze a nut inside ,to match the drain
plug thread, once you remove the plug

RE: 1999 Arctic Cat 500 4x4 changing the oil plug & cover(plug stripped). Dealer sent new plug, new cover & bag marked "gasket". It looks like 2 flat washers put together-metal. Where does this go?

If the gasket fits over the plug, I would guess it's the gasket for the plug for the oil pan. On cars/trucks, they recommend you change the gasket each time you change the oil (but few people or even garages do this).

it drains to a PAN
put back plug
fill to side level plug , bottom edge of hole.
all 5sp. manual trans.

what happens when not using 3/8" drive instead of 10mm square drive. it strips fast.

How much to change the oil pan on 2006 dodge charger sxt

You can purchase universal drain plugs at about any parts store that are designed to repair stripped out pans. They have a bar with a nut that fits into your drain hole and a plug seal that fit around the drain hole. This is the cheapest way to permanantly fix your problem.

I have 2004 VW Toureg, went to change engine oil and it has some plug in it that says thailand on it. It looks like a possible temporary plug. Was wondering if previous owner stripped it and put bandaid on...

changing the oil drain plug is actually normal maintenance. they are used and abused so over time they will start to leak. easiest way to know if it was stripped; next time you change your oil take a good look at the threads on the oil pan. are they rounded or kinda sharp? if it was stripped its not a big concern as long as it was re-threaded properly and the correct size and thread type installed afterwards. you cna get all the proper tools too do this your self at your local auto parts store.

Stripped Oil Plug.

This happened to mine at an oil change place. The plug must be removed and the
hole retapped to a larger size oil plug. They make a special plug for just this
purpose. I would recommend taking this to a shop with a lift to have it done.

Hi I have a 2000 vw beetle I had the oil changed and it all leaking twice as soon as they put it in it came out. Can you help me with this problem.

Have it towed back to the shop, it sounds like they installed the filter improperly or left the drain plug loose.

Just got a call from the shop doing my oil change and they told me that the oil drain pan plug is stripped. Wouldn't this happen from over-tightening and would likely have been caused by them? If they try...

Stripped threads are usually caused by improper thread alignment when reinstalling the plug or if you severly over tighten to the point of stripping, but this is very hard to do. If you had the vehicle since day one and they were the only ones changing the oil, then yes, it could be a fault of their own. Otherwise it may have been done awhile back, but it took this long before some actually said something about it.
