Manual transmissions have an oil level filler plug on the side of the transmission. Most use 90 wieght oil and also have a drain plug on the bottom. You will need a funnel with a right angle or flexible spout.

Where do i insert transmission oil

You need to indicate the year and model of vehicle you have and whether you are talking about an automatic transmission or a manual transmission.

If it is an auto, many models do not have dip sticks and filler tube in the vehicle's engine bay. The auto trans must be filled from the side of the transmission at the filler port and accessed from under the vehicle

I cannot locate the drain and filler plug for the maunal transmission 5speed of '97 corolla. Can anyone help

Hi Geoffrey,

Corolla '97 manual transmission using bolt 10mm ( hex) as filler plug and bolt 24 mm ( shallow socket) as drain plug transmission oil. Both bolts located on engine side ( and are not on top or bottom of your engine).

They just located on engine behind your radiator and beside your battery ( lower side). It is easier to acess them from bottom of engine. Their are on your gearbox.

Transmission Fluid Fluid Level Checking & Filling To Check:
  1. Connect a scan tool to the vehicle to read ATF temperature. ATF checking temperature should be 95° - 113°F (35° - 45°C).
  2. Start the engine.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Place a drain pan under the transmission.
  5. Allow the ATF temperature to reach 95° - 113°F (35° - 45°C). Automatic transmission fluid inspection plug vw-07-00-7273.gif

  6. Remove the inspection plug from the transmission housing. Fluid is pipe will run out. If fluid continues to drip out, no additional fluid is needed. If only the fluid in the overflow pipe runs out, additional fluid is needed.
To Fill:

  1. Pry the cap from the filler pipe. The cap locking device will be destroyed during removal.
  2. Pull the plug from the filler pipe.
  3. Add fluid slowly with VAG 1924 or equivalent until fluid runs out of the inspection hole. Install the inspection hole plug.
  4. Install the plug in the filler pipe and secure with a new cap.

I have a 2002 ford zx2 manual transmission how do i check fluid and add what do i use

There is no transmission dipstick on a manual transmission as well as a filler access point in the engine compartment. If you suspect problems with your transmission have a mechanic service it. If you absolutely want to do this then you need to jack the car up and locate the filler hole on the side of the transmission. Normally a pump is used however you can use a squeeze bottle with a tube attached to it. The fluid should be level with the bottom of the fill hole. Manual transmission fluid is just gear oil. You will love the smell... Good luck with whatever you decide.

Manual transmission oil change method - Dakota

Disconnect the plug underneath to drain fluid, look in your service manual to find the capacity and viscosity. There is a plug in the side of the transmission as well that is the filler plug, however it is more convenient to pour through the shifter once you remove it. If you use the filler plug method you will have to attach a tube to the oil bottle and squeeze it into the transmission as there may not be ample room to tilt the bottle and use gravity.
