A can of WD40; look for the flammable kind. Start the engine and spray around the carb linkage and base, work your way from top down, when you find a vacuum leak the engine will give you an indication as it changes the speed and sound. My 1985 had a worn throttle shaft on the carb. Had to replace the carb. Tried one from a junk yard but wound up with the same thing. Bought a new one from Webber. Hope this helps fixya up.

My 1988 buick is running bad could this be a bad Master cylinder

If you have power brakes, and vacuum is being lost on booster (a large hose running from master cylinder to port on engine),if you pump the brakes and idle goes up and down as you pump brakes I would think there is a leak ,if you can't stop car that would lead me to think master cylinder, is the brake pedal abnormaly very low ??

Why does my 89 justy die when i slow down?

It could be any number of things. The MAP sensor is bad, a severe vacuum leak, the fuel filter is plugged, it needs a tune-up like new plugs & wires etc., the fuel pump is weak or leaking if its a manual one. If the car runs rough at idle have a vacuum test done also, while the car is running at night, open the hood and see if the plug wires are arcing as you will see what looks like small lightning sparks around the wires. The worst case scenario is the piston rings are shot causing poor compression. A repair manual is usually available at the local auto parts store, or shopping center like Wal-Mart and Meijer.
I wish you the best of luck.

Idle good when cold, hotter it gets the worst it idles especially when sitting at stop lights

simple test for a vacuum brake booster
star and run the engine at idle without applying the foot brake
if it gets worse when the foot brake is applied , it is a vacuum leak in the booster ( replace the booster )
otherwise check for failed vacuum hoses including under dash control lines , vacuum leak at the manifold or EGR unit

I have a 2001 hyundia elantra problem i am having is weather it has just been started or is up to operating temp. it will rev to almost 3k then down to 1500then back up to 3k then back down i believ this...

If this is something that occured all of the sudden, unplug the vacuum hose from the vacuum booster behind the brake master cylinder. Plug the hose and see if the idle settles down. If it does, replace the brake booster. Let me know, also, what codes have been pulled?

Engine idle speed too fast some times. idle speed

Three things to check for:

1) High idle switch is on..*(vehicle thinks AC is running but it isn't.
You can try turning on the AC and see if the engine slows down to confirm this one.

2) Sticking or worn out Idle Air Control or IAC, You might get a check engine light with this one.....you might not if it's a mechanical failure.

3) Simplest of all. A vacuum leak. You can get the engine vacuum read while running if you go to a mechanic with a vacuum guage or an OBD 2 ecu code reader. There should be specs on what vacuum levels are normal for you car at idle.

Good luck and be careful!

Audi 1999 a4 runs rough idles up and down

I think the fuel has gone bad. it's cloging the injector ports. Try this first remove all fuel from the tank, replace the fuel filter. add 5 gallons of fuel and one bottle of fuel treatment. Run the engine for an hour
this will allow all of varnish from the bad fuel to disolve and clean the injectors. Don't be suprised
if this doesn't totally elimnate the problem chances are the plugs are fouled and need to be replaced also. Good luck
Hope this helps

When I come to a stop, the car dies. After idling for a few moments, the RPMs start dropping below 1000 and the car dies sometimes. What's my problem? I just replaced a fuel filter, and it was running...

Here are the common cause of surges, cold stalls, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
