I cannot help you with quantities, but I expect it to be no less than 1 gallon.
Therefore purchase at least 4 QTS. of Heavy Duty EP 80/90 Gear Oil.
I suggest this due to age of vehicle, also as you consider a Transfer gear oil change, you change the Differential as well.
For this also, an EP 80/90 is adequate. The joice of Mineral Oil or Synthetic is yours.

Jeep grand cherokee limited transfer case fluid type

what is the question.?
snarky answer "we give you permission" hehe
but my guess, is what fluid is it? that it/,
i presume you see the 2 plugs. there. fill and drain>?
always remove fill plug first. (if cant stop, do not drain it)
242 and 247 have different fluid capacity.
3pints and 2.5 pints respectively
the operators guide tells gear lube used there.
chapter on 242, example.
Dextron II is not correct in 2016, only DEXron VI. (newest grades are always best )
do not mix them, drain and fill with only one class of lube. 100%

It's on the tranfer case in the tail housing just one bolt holds it in pretty simple.

1990 jeep cherokee limited transfer case problems

Yes, hook up the front end. Failure to do so will burn out the diff in the trans case...sounds like you already may have done so. The system is meant to have LITTLE difference between front end and rear end...not 100%, liky your described situation...

You will know it is dead, aside from disassembly and inspection, by any slip stick or binding and release more harshley than before.

I would assume that there is something wrong with your exhaust again. Most likely its the exhuast donut gaskit that goes to the cat converter.
