The rated t-stat is 180 degrees F.but the truck should run normally at approx.190 F.

This is a thermal cut-out device, rather than a thermostat. A thermostat regulates temperature while a TCO is an emergency cut-out, similar to a fuse but activating at high temperature. Specifications are as follows:

Samsung DC47-00016C THERMOSTAT, 125/250V,16A,-35,125+-5.0

Samsung DC47-00016B THERMOSTAT, 125/250V,25A,-35,125+-5.0

So from the data, your part DC47-00016C is rated at 16A max current while the DC47-00016B is 25A. It is therefore acceptable to use the DC47-00016B with a higher current rating.

The Thermal cut-out device is rated at 125+/- 5.0, so will activate at temperatures from 120 Celsius. You should investigate why the TCO activated otherwise you could have the replacement do the same thing.

Put it in a pot of water and heat to boiling. The thermostat should start to open at about 180-190F. Just before the water boils (at 212F), the thermostat should be fully open.

That's a quick test. Your thermostat is set to open at a certain temperature, like, for example, 185 degrees F. If you know the rating for it, you could use a thermometer in the water, and see if it starts opening at the rated temperature. It may help if you suspend the thermostat with a piece of wire in the water-so it doesn't touch the hot bottom of the pan. If it touches the bottom it may skew the results just a tad.

  • Drain some coolant into a clean container until the coolant level is below the thermostat housing.
  • Remove the upper radiator hose connection from the thermostat housing.
  • Loosen the housing bolts and remove the housing.
  • Remove the gasket and scrape it carefully from the surface of the housing and the mounting surface on the engine. If the gasket remains on either of the surfaces, there will probably bea coolant leak after reassembly. Some engines use a rubber O-ring to seal a thermostat housing.
  • Compare the size of the thermostat to the old one. They are of different sizes, types, and temperature ratings.
  • The temperature rating is stamped on the sensing bulb on the bottom of the thermostat. The temperature bulb faces the block.

  2. Disconnect coolant temperature sensor wire connector.
  3. Remove sensor from thermostat housing.

Bad thermostat


Hello,
To replace the thermostat in most vehicles yourself;
Remove the hose from the housing, then remove bolts from the housing and lift the housing off
to access the thermostat. Pay attention to witch side is up on the thermostat that you remove, the
new one will have to go in the same way. Also look at the temperature rating that is stamped into
the thermostat that you take out, and make sure the new one has the same temperature rating.
(failure to do so can cause false readings by some sensors, and may start triggering error codes)

Install new thermostat, right side up, put housing back on and bolt back down, hook hose back on
to the housing. Check the coolant level. Start the engine and let it run for 6 to 8 minutes to reach,
"normal operating temperature", and look for any leaking. before you turn the engine off turn you
heater wide open and listen for a click. Most of the time when a thermostat opens you can hear a
click and may hear the coolant flowing through the system. Shut the engine off, wait for it to cool
down and then check your coolant level one more time. ( do not fill all the way up, only fill to
FULL line on resrvior.)

If you want to double check the thermostat first;

How to test the thermostat in most vehicles;
Make sure the heater is off, start the engine and let it run for 6 to 8 minutes, ( this will allow the
engine to reach, " normal operating temperature "), from the inside of the vehicle turn the heater
temperature on high and turn the fan speed on high.
1. Listen very closely for a click sound from the engine, ( most thermostats make a click when
they open )
2. Watch your temperature guage, it should begin to lower as the coolant starts to circulate.
3. Usually within a few minutes the radiator fan will kick.

P0128 coolant temp below thermostat/regulating temp


P0128 - Coolant Thermostat (Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature)

This means that the engine's PCM detected that the engine has not reached the required temperature level within a specified amount of time after starting the engine. The intent of the P0128 code is to indicate a faulty thermostat. Similar codes: P0125

In determining the engine did not reach a "normal" temperature, it takes into account the length of time the vehicle has been running, the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor reading, the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor reading, and the speed of the vehicle.

Symptoms: You will likely not notice any drivability problems other than the MIL illumination.

Causes: A code P0128 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
* Low engine coolant level
* Leaking or stuck open thermostat
* Faulty cooling fan (running too much)
* Faulty coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
* Faulty intake air temperature (IAT) sensor

Possible Solutions: Past experience indicates that the most likely solution is to replace the thermostat. However here are some suggestions on troubleshooting and repairing a P0128 OBD-II code:
* Verify coolant strength & level
* Verify proper cooling fan operation (check if it's running more than it should). Replace if necessary.
* Verify proper engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor operation, replace if necessary.
* Verify proper intake air temperature (IAT) sensor operation, replace if necessary.
* If the above items check out good, replace the thermostat
* If Nissan vehicle, check for Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs), as the ECM may need to be reprogrammed to correct the P0128 code

Proper operating temperature on 2004 Jeep Wrangler, Unlimited


The thermostat controls operating temperature. This occurs at a preset temperature (typically 195 degrees F. or so), which is usually stamped on the thermostat itself. The thermostat should be fully open about 20 degrees F. above the rated temperature. So your operating temperature is about right. If you have doubts, just replace the thermostat with a new one of the correct temp.
