Question about Pontiac Grand Am

I have a 1997 grand am and have some ovegesting issues. I have changed out the thermostat, radiator, new hoses, & heater core. When I drive the vehicle the temperature gauge says its operating at the high side of the normal range, but I still hear bubbling from the engine compartment. I was told I might have warped heads.

Whoever told you you have a blown head gasket or a cracked hed is going in the right direccion. If you have replace all of the above and your car still overheating its almost sure that you will have to replace at least the head gasket. worst case scenario will be a cracked block. Take it somewhere where they check head gasket failures and They will tell you for sure.

99 ford contour gauge shows running hot. Change both sensors near thermostat and the thermostat. Flushed system and burped it. Ac or heat makes no difference. Fans seems to be working. Any ideas?


Is it ACTUALLY overheating? Check for heat at the top and bottom radiator hoses, and at both heater core hoses. If one is cold then your radiator or your heater core may be plugged and in need of a individual flush.

you may have a air pocket and it needs to be bleed. check and see if both heater core hoses are getting hot

How to back flush heater core 2007 grand prix


drain coolant system locate heater cores hoses going through firewall you need to buy the radiator flush kit at any auto parts stores. remove heater cores hoses from one end or buy extra long heater hoses same size as heater core hoses in vechicle at auto parts store use the flush kit when you flush through one of the heater core hoses let the other hose drain in a drain pan when you use home garden hose use low water pressure dont use garden hose to the max or you will rupture heater core. your best bet let radiator shop flush whole coolant system. because heater cores hoses are in a tight spot.make sure engine off if you just going to flush out heater core only .after flushing heater core good time to replace heater core hoses.if job too hard or complicated let radiator shop flush out radiator the engine block and heater core because if radiator stopped up or engine block stopped up the gunk and rust will reenter plug up heater core.if you tight on money you can flush out your own radiator.drain out radiator using large drain pan. remove top radiator hose and remove bottom radiator hoses connect to water pump.use garden hose with flush kit part with water pressure not too high put garden hose to top radiator hose run water until clear water run out bottom radiator hose in drain pan,the flush out engine block remove thermostat.if you had another spare thermostat housing with RTV SILICONE SEALANT THAT HAS SET UP INSTALL THERMOSTAT HOUSING BACK TO ENGINE WITHOUT THERMOSTAT FLUSH OUT THE ENGINE BLOCK, WHEN DONE INSTALL NEW THERMOSTAT THEN INSTALL ORIGINAL THERMOSTAT HOUSING WITH NEW ORING WHICH YOU BUY AT DEALERSHIP.IF ALL SOUND COMPLICATED LET RADIATOR SHOP FLUSH OUT COOLANT SYSTEM.

Heater fan blows good but only blows cold air. Is it the heater core? The thermostat? How hard are they to replace if i do it myself?


Check the heater core by checking the hotness or coldness of the 2 tubes at the firewall that lead to the heater core.

If both tubes are hot, the heater core is fine. If both tubes are cold, then the heater core is plugged up and will have to be flushed out or replaced.

The thermostat, if stuck open, will delay the heating up of the heater core. It's not hard to replace the thermostat.

Thermostat Removal & Installation 4.2L Engine To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Some of the coolant
    • The upper radiator hose f150_42_thermostat.gif

    • The bolts (A).
    • The water outlet connection (B)
    • The water thermostat and paper gasket assembly (C)
To Install:
NOTE: The water thermostat is indexed and must be installed correctly.
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • The water thermostat
    • The thermostat
    • The water outlet adapter
    • The bolts
      1. Torque to: 80 inch-lbs (9 Nm)
    • The upper radiator hose
    • The coolant
4.6L/5.4L Engines To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Some of the coolant
    • The upper radiator hose f150_46-54_thermostat.gif

    • The bolts (A)
    • The water outlet connection (B)

    • A new O-ring to position the water thermostat in the upper intake manifold

My 1997 Grand Am is leaking antifreeze. It overheats and smells like burning antifreeze. We had a new water pump put on it and a new heater core put on it 4 days ago. Neither of those solved the problem....


it maybe a hose not installed correctly, if it is a v-6 check the intake gaskets for signs of leaking, when you over heat the engine, automatically replace the thermostat, the cooling fans may have a hand in the overheating issue, they may not be turning on due fan motor failure, check cooling fan fuses, very rarely does the coolant temp sensor give out and if it has, that would also be the reason the cooling fans are not coming on, a cracked radiator is also common on gm or any other radiator with plastic tanks. good luck

Dodge 2002 Grand Caravan V6 3.3 engine overheating/no cabin heat.


Replace the bad radiator hose first.  Second- get you special formulated anti-freeze dye from the auto store and pour it into the radiator.  Third- make sure you got all the air pockets out of your system, cause the coolant system won't work with air pockets in it.  Fourth- Check for leaks by looking for the colored dye.  If it's not the radiator hose, then could possibly be a pin hole in your radiator.  Would suggest replacing all the radiator hoses at the same time while you got the coolant system disconnected, cause you don't want to have to come back and replace another hose in a few months.

Heater not working


if you got heat when its running and almost nothing iddling the heater core inside the car has rectriction idle circulation not enough prestone pass thrue the radiator because of scale when our driving way more circulation more prestone go thrue ¸=more heat you need to flush the radiator inside the car normally i put a radiator flush leave it running longer then what they say go for a drive remove the heater core hose be carefull not to break the pipe use garden hose pass hose water pressure o n both side do it a few time each side flush all the prestone add new prestone you shoul have way more heat good luck p.s some shop might tell you change the heater core that perfect but very big money do it right its cheap and gonna work pierre

Coolant issue with 1997 blazer


check to see if you have a leak in your heater core,and if the heater core is not leaking you might have a leak on the intake gasket or the head gasket
