Question about 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

2 Answers

I have a 2006 jetta gli. I failed emissions because the check engine light won't come on. Took it to the shop where I was told the bulb was out, but you cannot replace just a bulb. The entire control panel must be replaced and that cost about $1000. Is this for real? Can the bulb itself not be replaced?

Left VW back in 1999, back then you were able to remove the instrument cluster and replace the bulb. Not a common bulb, should be able to get it from VW.

They are perfectly correct in what they say ----- but iam a back street cowbow and proud of being able to bodge things to save money and this light is just a LED so i would look into the possibility of soldering a new LED into the circuit ,the dealer will not do this as any dealer is their to make a profit and a simple plausable repair like this doesnt earn them money ,Only unit changing like you have been quoted does ,cant make out why this is a failure as its not even checked here in europe but a probe inserted into exhaust to measure gases,In fact i would defy any emmisions test station in america to even try to connect to a europeon vehicle after 2005 ,its all enccrypted software dealer only via the internet with the factory .Please print this reply off and show them as it would interest me greatly to know their answer and if i had the money i would bring a new renault over and see what they can do with it because i do think their probing of the OBDII woiuld activate the immobilisor as illegal access .Be very interested to hear their remarks as a fly on the wall when they plug in and it goes off

You'll need to have the car scanned and get the OBD II P Code. Most auto parts store will do it for free. That will tell you why the light is on.

Emissions warning light came on. Car runs great

It may be the computer itself. If the light keeps returning, either the computer is faulty or the fans are really failing. I do not recommend dealers but actual mechanic shops.

Car failed inspection because of the check engine light

to ideas come to mind, maybe a bad bulb in the dash (you can take this out (depending on mechanical knowledge)

or find a smaller inspections shop and try taking the car in again in hopes of that they won't catch it

Failed smog cause check engine light

I can tell you for sure that all US models of the Ford Ranger came with a emission system that incorporated a MIL or check eng light, go to the dealer and have them run your VIN on the Ford on line information service, that will give you the engine Calibration of the emission system, you can then find out what emission system was used, export or US.
