Question about 2001 Toyota RAV4

Open Question

2001 Toyota RAV4 does not stay running once engine turns over. Quickly stalls and dashboard inidicator lights blinking (including oil, check engine etc). Almost does a shuddering behavior before it stalls. The interior smelled strongly of gasoline after. Mechanic was able to get started and stays started. Could not find a problem. Said could be some bad gasoline or loose connection. Any other ideas as I want to take a long trip soon. Mileage is under 100K

SOURCE: 2001 toyota corolla parking lights stay on

Most likely a bad headlamp switch, UNLESS you have a remote starter hooked up. Corollas with a body computer really do not like remote starters, they cause really bizaare things to happen.

SOURCE: Toyota Camry 1995 Check Engine Light (stays on)

usually when this occurs (engine light) the ecm has detected some type of failure with one or components of the engine. ur gonna need to have a diagnostic scan done to determine the source. If the vehicle is OBD certified autozone part stores will do it for free. to be sure that its not just a minor "hickup" u can reset yous car's ecm urself by disconnecting the positive battery for 1 minute. if the engine light returns then i would have a diagnostic scan done. SOURCE: 1986 toyota pickup starts wont stay running

It seems there is some kind of air entering the carburator where its not required to do so or the idling soleniod switch is malfunctioning, thus not allowing the air to enter for the engine to idle .
Also recheck the vaccum pipes if they are correctly refitted per the schematics under the hood.More over remove the idling switch and blow some air to the hole probabley theres some kind of obstruction over there .

Good Luck.

Please take the car for a scan. Your alternator must be getting bad.

SOURCE: 2003 Camry won't stay idling after I changed battery

This is extremely common :)

With time your throttle body gets gummed up with oily residue from the PCV system. As this happens, the computer adapts to the restriction it causes in the throttle body.
When you unhook the battery, these learned values are lost and the default settings for idle control are used. Unfortunately the default settings are no longer sufficient to keep the idle correct with it all gummed up.

Take your intake hoses off the throttle bodies and clean the insides (open the throttle plates for better access) with a rag and some brake parts cleaner or throttle plate cleaner, available from your local parts store.

Reassemble and start the car, your idle problems should be gone immediately.

When I turn off the car my oil and engine light comes on and stays on. It only goes off when the car is running.

It is how it must work. Nothing wrong with your vehicle. However, when you switch the car completely off and remove the key, the oil and engine lights must be off.

Engine light on

No the service engine or check engine light means there is a problem with the performance of the engine or the emissions components.
You would need to have the computer scanned for trouble codes to proceed. Most auto parts stores can do it for free in hopes of selling you some parts.
You can look the codes up online.

Oil light on dashboard.

That means that your oil light is working correctly... that is actually your oil "pressure" light and if your engine is not running the sensor is telling the computer that there is not oil pressure. Once your engine is started then the light will go off

2000Toyota RAV4. stalled. wont start.

I don't want to be a prophet of doom but it sounds like the timing belt jumped a tooth. If it did the noise you heard would have been the valve touching the piston. If it went another tooth the engine will not start. You need to check the timing, correct it and try and start it. If it either locks up or won't start you probably have a bent valve.

Maintenence light won't turn off

the check engine is on to alert you to the fact that a failure has occurred in the engine or emission system electronic controls, there are over 200 diff faults that turn this light on, you must have the system tested to get the trouble code that is stored in the memory of the computer whenever the light is turned on..

Oil pressure switch

There are no recalls that pertain to oil pressure switches on any Toyota vehicle. I would like to know exactly what part of the switch popped out, the entire switch, or just a part of it. What probably happened is somebody banged into the switch when changing the oil, and compromised the integrity of the switch. The oil pumping out issue: The Oil Pressure Switch is on the first oil galley out of the oil pump. This means that the switch port gets full oil pressure while the engine is running. This is around 30 PSI. With the switch, or any part of it missing, it would not take too long to pump out the 3.9 quarts of oil in the pan.
