Question about 1986 Toyota Corolla 2 Door

1 Answer

1986 toyota corolla ( 4 door sedan carberated ) always starts when cold but lately it has been dying when idling at a light or at speeds under 10km pr hour when still warming up. It then will not turn over until i try it for several minutes. Battery levels look fine, I added some water remover to the fuel about 3 weeks ago and have just added a complete fuel system cleaner. Sometimes there is a bit of hesitation when i give it gas while driving and once or twice it has even started surging slightly. I removed the fuel filter and blew through it and there didnt seem to be much resistance and seemed fairly clean from what I could see. The car did sit for 6-7 months and I have been driving it for about 45 days now. What would be the cause of this?

Thanks, I remember doing what you said above a few times and it doesn't seem to work.

on a side note: if it was the fuel pump, wouldn't it be hard to cold-start it?

SOURCE: Toyota 02 is stalling, won't idle

Check the voltage of battery with voltmeter.. It is sometimes possible that if voltage of battery drops and jump start is needed, your computer will only charge to the last voltage that was recognized which would be when jumped...Try and charge the battery if possible I would actually suggest that you have your battery tested at local auto parts store and if it is presumed in good condition ,let them charge for you to max capacity . If battery has been tested and labeled as no good replace if necessary... Oh, and first thing you should do is make sure your positive and negative battery connections are clean and tight...if this didnt fix problem please give more info on what was found when advice above was followed...Good Luck!!!!

Spark plug wires from any car will work if they are long enough. Just make sure the end that goes on the distributor cap will fit your cap.

1998 corolla dies when idling runs ok driving

Engine stalls cold or RPM fluctuates at idle up and down or dies near idle.

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve but always run a OBD2 fault code as well as the cleaning procedure. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control. If the above cleaning doesn't cure your issues you need to have the computer controlled automatic idle speed control system diagnosed and repaired by a dealer or electronic engine control repair shop.

NOT A SHORT IN THE CIRCUIT! MORE LIKE A FAULTY THERMOSTATIC FAN SWITCH,ON THE BOTTOM OF THE RADIATOR .Or a sending unit that is grounded all the time.

if its carburated, there an adjustment screw ,follow throtle cable to linkage on carb, once at linkage you should see a screw, you may have to take a good look to see it , then slowly trun screw in until you get the correct idle, good luck.
