Question about Ford Ranger

2 Answers

I have a 2004 Ford Ranger 2WD 3.0L V6 automatic. A few days ago I noticed a "squeek squeek squeek" when the truck is idling. When you tach up, it gets faster and then goes away or is just drowned out by engine noise. Serpentine belt is in great shape, having been replaced about a year ago. Gave the truck new plugs and wires about 2 months ago. If you stand in front of the truck with the hood up, engine running, it sounds like the sound is dead center of the block. BUT...if you stand on either the driver or passenger side of the block, it sounds like "squeeky" lives towards the back of the block. The cherry on top is that I now have also developed 4 error codes (had them checked by a buddy): "Multiple missfire", "missfire within first 1000 RPM", "Cylinder 4 missfire", and "Cylinder 5 missfire". Have I got bad wires, plugs, fuel rail, injectors...etc. I have had about 9 different "shade-tree mechanics" listen to the sound and had guesses from idler pulley, alternator bearing, partially clogged injectors, and ofcourse "it's a ford". Please help me...

You can remove the serpantine belt and spin the altenator, idlers, ect. by hand to find the cause of the squeek. Without the belt in place, the faulty part may sound dry and metalic and have play in the bearing. Also with the belt removed, you can restart the engine for less than 30 seconds to see if the squeek is gone, to be certain the sound is coming from the drive belt area. How long has the truck been running poorley? If during the last tune-up, #4 and #5 plug wires were swapped accidently....You could check compression on those two adjoining cylinders, to check for a blown head gasket between cylinders. Also inspect the spark plugs for color, gap or cracks in the porcelain.

I was going to go with the idler pulley as well, but the engine codes threw me off. Try this.
Ohm all the injectors any that are way out of line replace. I've used a small screwdriver with a light bulb in the handle slide the tip along side the wire and check for spark on all cylinders. I've also used an ohm meter and checked the wires it normally runs appx. 1/2 scale.
Take a compression test a bad lifter or valve can cause problems.
Use a can of carb. cleaner and spray along the edges of the intake manifold.
If the engine smooths out you have a leak at this point. Its always possible a gasket is pinched or you have a small crack.
Bad injector wires also cause misfires.

This means you have a leak in the head gasket. Get it fixed because there is small amounts also going into the oil and will be hard on the bearings. Good Luck, JERROD

If automatic transmission wont work engine block's are not the same, if stander transmission you could swap out bell housing held on with four bolt's from one to the other. Good luck and hope this was very helpful.

You need to turn the engine over to find Top dead center,
Then remove the cap and see if the rotor is pointing to #1,Then verify the wires have started in that position and are rotating in the right direction.

Does the 3.0l transmission fit on the 4.0l engine

Hiya,

There are 5 automatic transmissions used in the Ford Ranger, Explorer and Mountaineer. They may be identified by checking the transmission code on the Safety Standard Certification Label attached to the driver's side door post, in the space marked Trans. The transmissions can also be identified by a tag attached to the lower left hand extension attaching bolt. The transmission codes are as follows:
  • 1991–94 code T is for the A4LD transmission
  • 1995–99 code T is for the 4R44E (2.3L, 2.5L & 3.0L) or 4R55E (4.0L) transmission
  • 1996–99 code U is for the 4R70W (5.0L) transmission
  • 1997–99 code D is for the 5R55E (5-speed automatic) transmission
So, what you need to do now is...establish from a FORD workshop, whether both the A4LD and 4R55E transmissions share the same components and mounting dimensions.

Cheers,

Scott

1986 ford ranger ready to burn it to the ground

check the ignition switch, they separate and cause this stall out, try holding the ignition to the crank position just short of causing the starter to run, if the engine stays running then the ignition switch is defective, Ford recalled many of these for this problem, not sure your truck was affected, but it does use the sam switch and gets the same problem.
