Usually that is caused by either the Throttle Body Position Sensor (TPS) or a fuel issue. I would replce the sensor which shouldn't cost much at the store, and if that doesn't work (it should) I would look into your fuel pressure regulator.

Plz check engine coolant temperature sending unit that feeds the computer. (Not the one that controls gauge on dash).

I would take it by any auto parts store to have them pull codes from the computer. They should be able to tell you the problem. However, I would suspect the IAC (idle air controller) to be faulty.

Try and clean the throttle body. Carbon will gum up on the blade and the vaccume passages, which will cause a surge and stall.

2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette surging

sounds like the idle air control motor is sticking , not sure what engine you have 3.4 litre ?? also you can ck the throttle plate right on top where the throttle cable bracket assembly part of that bracket holds down a vaccum line that has a rubber gromnet that after time leaks causing idle surge , hope this helps
