When the transmission will not move in reverse this means the reverse apply band is worn out 95% of the time, since the bank lies deep inside the transmission the transmission must be torn down and overhauled to repair this, there is no in vehicle fix for this loss of reverse.

Jeep stalls or runs ruff when shifted to reverse tranny was rebuilt not sure if bands were adjusted properly

Hello. Your engine might be burning transmission fluid when shifted into reverse. If bands were out of adjustment, it just wouldn't move...or very slowly.

Wont go in reverse how to adjust band for reverse

what makes you think there are bands. ?
did you look in the FSM>
did you post exact transmission in your car , ?
here is a free look 1993 chickodee.

32RH (has bands) page 96 and 97 (band adj)
or
AW-4 no bands. uses solenoid clutch packs. electric.
see them both and all tests and settings.
is yours a TCM shifted ? tranny, yes then why not scan it.
or the flash code procedure. page 174

the TCM cars will flash OD lamp or drive lamps or something
to tell you its got error codes.
get them.

best of best. aw-4
(see the manual mode test. many cars have this, not just jeeps)
may TCM tranny cars, (RTM read the FSM and learn this)

http://mikestrawbridge.com/blog/2011/09/aw4-troubleshooting/

hint 2:
make sure the tranny ground stap is not broken.
if it is, it will never ever shift right or reliably
true for just about any TCM car.
see one guy last week bought new tranny ,and never used
a voltmeter on the solinoids. had 12v casing.. a shame.

Reverse gear doesnt engage

I would try draining the fluid and changing the filter and fluid (with the oem spec fluid) this will give your tranny a lil more pressure to help engage the reverse , hopefully the filter is just plugged or gummy thus blocking fluid passage, its the easiest fix b4 going to the expensive tranny shop$$$ (they may also be able to adjust the pressure applied to the reverse bands, but ithey almost always seem to want to sell u a new transmission first so beware, try a few different shops to see if they can adjust the pressure, if the filter change doesnt help

No reverse after i park my 1962 ford automatic

Fluid level and a dirty filter are the first things to check, then a band adjustment is next on the list. as the pan needs to come off to change the filter adjst the bands at the same time. the tea levels in the bottom of the oil pan will tell you in there are more serious issues inside.

I have no reverse on my 1991 geo prizm automatic

linkage adjusted to FSM spec is 1st.
this is in the FSM or at alldata dot com.
who told you that, the internet?
LOL
look at the block diagram of any A/T
you move the lever. the lever moves the trans-selector side rod
inside A/T, the selector goes to Rev. and passes High pressure fluid (AFT) to things.and
to the rev, bands. many things can go wrong inside any A/T to cause that failure. even a 10 cent o-ring, for sure.

you could (dangerous) force the lever by hand (wheels and ebrake set) and see if it hits rev, now?

it might cost $1500 to fix that bad ten cent 0-ring.
one reason to avoid A/T tranny.

Automatic transmission band adjustment

Don't have specs on band but the rule is that it should be close enough to the drum to engage without slamming, and loose enough to permit drum to turn without band dragging on it. Biggest problem I've seen people have when adjusting is that adjustment tightens down while turning lock nut. To avoid this, I usually adjust a bit looser than final adjustment so it tightens to correct position instead of becoming too tight. Don't drive 'till you have it right or you will burn band surface. When engaged in reverse, band should be applied and cannot drag. If you adjusted another band, check that one for improper adjustment.
