Question about 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

The power locks will only work if i am near the vehicle and only in certain positions. Seems like the antennas (if that is what they have) at certain positions of the car are not recieving. I used to be able to lock/unlock from any position at a fair distance. I have installed new batteries but that didn't help. The dealer checked the strength of the remote and said it was good.

Seems like a new receiver is in order. there are but two pieces, transmitter and receiver, and you know that one is good. make sure no space aliens have covered the receiver unit with aluminum foil. these can be had used, but it is going to have to be installed and programmed by a dealer. and if they all loose sensitivity with age, then you may be buying an identical unit in every respect.

I know they have some type of reputation, but i have never been impressed with any aspect of Jeeps.
Poor quality in everything, nothing thought out, can not even make a set of adequate door hinges.

My keyless entry for my 2008 Volvo s 40 won't work. I've tried replacing the battery but it still doesn't work. Anything I may can do before spending money on a new key.?

How are you trying to open the door , button on key fob ? With this system you can pull up on the drivers handle an it activates Antennas in the external side door handles (C30/C70 front doors, S40/V50 rear doors)
  • Antennas in the passenger compartment and cargo compartment
  • An antenna in the rear bumper
  • Quick lock motors in the lock units in the side doors
  • The remote keyless entry (RKE) receiver receives a signal from the key
  • The switch in the clutch pedal (manual transmissions) or a signal from the brake pedal switch via the central electronic module (CEM) (automatic transmissions)
  • Key-in switch.
  • Switch in door handle and lock button on handle .
If a door handle is pulled outward, a switch closes that wakes up the system and activates the antennas in the handles on the side where the handle has been pulled out. If a valid key is within a radius of approx. 1.5 metres from the handle, the relevant door will open and the vehicle will unlock one or several doors. Which doors are unlocked depends on the settings for the system. The vehicle can also be unlocked if the handle is affected on the tailgate.

Is this an all the time issue or only in certain locations? If only in certain locations you may be getting interference blocking/restricting/reducing the range of your remote. (power lines, electrical equipment etc). You may still have a battery issue in the remote(s) depending on how often the remote was used and its probably the least expensive way to check the system. Second you can have a disconnected/bad antenna. Most newer vehicles have the antenna built into the car I believe the Audi is located inside the C-Pillar of the SUV (not easy to access). It could have become damaged or disconnected. Third and finally possibly the alarm unit itself (very rare) could be a cause. Start with the batteries.

Smoke coming out of front speaker, smelled buring inside vehicle found no burned wires, could it be the antenna motor, seems like it doesnt work anymore antenna doesn't go down.

    Hi Ron,

When something smokes, my first question is, 'Has after market equipment been installed?'.

Number two is, 'Are ALL the power lines fused'.

That includes the power antenna signal wire.

It sounds as though you are a natural trouble shooter. Any recent or concurrent events almost always are related. It's is certainly the first place I'd look.

    Best regards

Power windows will only work from driver controls

Some vehicles with power window have a window lock switch on the driver's door. The switch prevents the other windows from being opened with the individual switch. Check to make certain that the window lock switch is in the unlocked position. If that is not the case, it could be a ground wire issue in the wiring.

Need to know how to remove a regular antenna from a 1996 Toyota Tacoma. It is not a power antenna.

    Toyota Pick-ups/Land Cruiser/4Runner 1989-1996
    Antenna - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

If your antenna mast is the type where you can unscrew the mast from the fender, simply do so with a pair of pliers. Most damaged antennas are simply the result of a truck wash or similar mishap, in which the mast is bent.

    Manual Antenna
    1. Disconnect the antenna cable at the radio by pulling it straight out of the set. Depending on access, this may require loosening the radio and pulling it out of the dash.
    2. Working under the instrument panel, disengage the cable from its retainers.
On some models, it may be necessary to remove the instrument panel pad to get at the cable.
    1. Outside, unsnap the cap from the antenna base.
    2. Remove the screw(s) and lift off the antenna, pulling the cable with it, carefully.
    To install:
    1. When reinstalling, make certain the antenna mount area is clean and free of rust and dirt. The antenna must make a proper ground contact through its base to work properly.
    2. Install the screws and route the cable into the cab. Make certain the cable is retained in the clips, etc.
    3. Connect the cable to the radio; reinstall the radio if it was removed.

    Power Antenna Mast
The power antenna system contains a relay. If the power antenna is inoperative, the relay is the first place to look. The actual motor rarely fails.
The power antenna mast is replaceable on the Pick-Up and 4Runners. If the mast is damaged or broken, proceed as follows:
    1. Perform this repair with the battery cables connected. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position.
    2. Remove the antenna nut.
    3. If equipped with a CD player, press the AM and FM buttons on the receiver and simultaneously turn the ignition switch to ACC .
    4. For non-CD player units, press the AM button and simultaneously turn the ignition switch to ACC .
    5. The antenna motor will run, unwinding the mast from the spool. have an assistant guide the mast so it doesn't fall and damage the bodywork. When fully extended, the mast will be released. Remove it, and leave the ignition in the ACC position.
    To install:
    1. Insert the new cable so that the teeth face the rear of the vehicle. Feed the cable into the motor until the cable reaches the bottom, about 12 in. (30cm).
    2. Have an assistant ready and prepared to guide the cable. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK . The motor will run, winding the cable onto the spool and drawing the antenna down into the mount.
    3. If the cable does not wind, twist the cable at the top of the housing; the part at the bottom may have turned while being pushed down the hole.
    4. Once wound onto the spool, install the antenna nut even if the antenna is not fully retracted. Test the antenna elevation and retraction; the mast will eventually retract fully.
Hope helped with this (remember rated this post).

What is the easiest way to extract and replace a fixed antenna and wire from my 96 Cierra?

    Hi,

If your antenna is of the electric type, mounted into the vehicle's body, then it is more common to replace the MAST only.

    This is done by:

    - loosen & remove the upper locking ring (between antenna & vehicle body),
    - turn radio to ON. This will unwind the antenna & cable fully (if cable has teeth, note direction which cable is facing).
    - feed replacement mast cable into cavity (ensure cable is facing same way as when it was removed) until cable stops feeding, and hold in position.
    - turn radio power off. Cable should grab & begin to retract. Guide the new mast into position. As cable feeds in, the mast will follow and retract to its closed position.
    - secure upper ring

    Cheers,

My power antenna is stuck in the upright position. It prevents me from going through the car wash and is overall a bad look for the vehicle. I would like to know how to either put it down manually and...

i forgot to mention... no I dont believe i hear anything. the one noise that i hear occasionally is a very short "bshhhh" roughly < or = 1second. I bought the car from someone who took wonderful care of it however i dont believe the antenna was used a lot. It was slightly corroded or whatever which certainly could have caused it to draw too much power to the motor resulting in the motor burning out.

I would almost rather find out how to just take the whole thing out and deal without an antenna unless i find something reasonable on ebay.

    Anti theft malfunction

Heres the skinny....the wire around the ignition switch is actually an antennea for your anti theft transponder system. the other two wires work in conjuction with the anti theft system in that it supplies power to the ignition switch itself when your key is inserted into the ignition. Inside your key is a chip which emits a certain frequency known only to your vehicle.....when this key is near the ignition switch (ie going to start the car) the antenna senses the frequency and the anti theft system powers down and powers up the ignition so you can start your vehicle. Thanks for using fixya! Any more questions shoot me a email!

    Sincerely,

    JC

    Tacoma radio antenna

Use an antenna wrench to remove the chrome nut (I found a wrench on JC Whitney's website). Once the nut's removed, do the following (copied from the factory service manual):

    REMOVE ANTENNA ROD

    (a) Turn the ignition switch to ”LOCK” position.
    (b) Press the ”AM, FM” buttons on the radio receiver, and simultaneously
turn the ignition switch to ”ACC” position.
    HINT:
The rod will extend fully and be released form the motor
    antenna.
After removing the antenna rod, leave the ignition switch
    on ”ACC” position.
    NOTICE:
To prevent body damage when the antenna rod is released,
hold the rod while it comes out.
    2. Auto Antenna Models:
    INSTALL ANTENNA ROD
    (a) Insert the cable of the rod until it reaches the bottom.
    HINT:
When inserting the cable, the teeth on the cable must face
toward the rear of the vehicle.
Insert the antenna approx. 300 mm (11.8 in.).
    (b) Wind the cable to retract the rod by turning the ignition
    switch to ”LOCK” position.
    HINT:
If the ignition switch is already in ”LOCK” position, do step
1 (c) first, then turn the ignition switch to ”ACC” position.
In case the cable is not wound, twist it, as shown in the
    illustration.
Even if the rod has not retracted fully, install the antenna
nut and inspect the antenna rod operation. It will finally retract
    fully.
    (c) Inspect the antenna rod operation by pressing the radio
    wave band select buttons.

You can buy a new power mast online (ex. Discount Toyota Parts) for about $30.
