Question about 1981 Ford F 100

Put all new brakes on 1968 ford f-100 Shoes-Spring kit-Wheel cylinders-Master Cylinder brakes pump up and hold while foot is on pedal remove foot and pedal will go to the floor. Any Suggetsions

    No they have not been oversized i can disconect the front shoes and block they line and have a good pedal hook the front lines up same problem

    I think that you may not be able to bleed all air from wheel cylinders because some times when they have been removed it is easy to mix up which one goes where, the bleed screws need to be uppermost so that air bubbles can be expelled.
    Just a hunch?

First of all, I hope you got a new master cylinder with your disc brake kit. A new master cylinder should be bled before connecting the brake lines and then never allowed to pull in air during the rest of the bleeding process. A couple of fittings ans hoses should have come with the new master cylinder [see the kit listed for a picture]. If the master cylinder has an air bubble, you won't be able to properly bleed the rest of the system.
For the rest of the system you can make up a small catch bottle like the one pictured in the one man brake bleed kit; make sure the hose goes tot he bottom of the catch bottle. You have to cap the master cylinder reservoir before pumping the brakes or fluid will squirt out and all over; brake fluid is a like paint remover. Then start with the brake farthest from the master cylinder and bleed fluid out by having a buddy pump the brakes while you hold the catch bottle above the bleeder port so no air gets back in. [hint, put some pipe teflon tape on the outer threads only, not the inner end of the bleeder screws to seal the threads]. Check the master cylinder level often! If the brakes still are spongy after the first round of bleeding, have a buddy pump up the brake pedal with the bleeder screw closed and hold pressure on the pedal; you then open the bleed port until the pedal goes to the floor; have your buddy hold down the pedal until you close the port. Repeat on all brakes until the pedal is firm.

Busted wheel cyl on rear wheel lost fluid now no pressure back there what do i look for


if it is the wheel cylinder that is leaking then it will have to be replaced and all the components cleaned with brake cleaner.depending how badly soaked the brake shoes are you may have to replace them also.you may have to heat the brake line that connects to the wheel cylinder,or even replace the line if it gets damaged.the bleed all the air out of the system,

How do you change rear drum brake shoes on a 1999 couger.


SECTION 206-02: Drum Brake 1999 Cougar Workshop Manual REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Procedure revision date: 09/14/2001 Brake Shoes Removal
  1. Loosen the wheel nuts.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section 100-02.
  1. Remove the wheel.
  1. Release the brake shoe automatic adjuster.

    1. Remove the retainers (if equipped).
    1. Remove the drum.

Booster is okay, you have to bench bleed the MC, first. So, since it is installed, bleed it with a kit from the parts store, little plastic hoses screw in to the brake hose fittings, and put other end under fluid in reservoir. pump slowly, especially wait at end of release, for fluid to refill piston chamber....pump until no bubbles...

FROM THIS POINT you must not allow fluid in reservoir to go low, or start all over again....

Now bleed the brakes and you will eventually get pressure.

if you talking brakes not clutch. you can pump the brakes all day long and they don't build pressure and you not losing fluids the master is out. now if you pump them up and they are rock hard your hydrabooster is out.now if your mechanically incline you can order a master cylinder rebuild kit for like 20-30 bucks which is basically orings from local parts store and only tools you need are snapring pliers. or you can change the master ,bench bleed it first then bleed out the rr,lr,rf,lf in that order.hope i help.all under 100 bucks

Got my tires rotated and the shop informed me that my brakes had gone bad and needed replacing. Rather than spending 900 dollars I didn't have, i opted to do the work myself. Brakes work now, but...


that sounds just like a leaky none return velve in the master cylinder or very low on brake fluid it may even have got air in the system also if you removed the rear drums and never ajusted up the brake shoes this could give you this problem check the rear brums first the brake shoes should just be tuching the drums if there not pull off the drums and wind up the ajusters then refit the drum till the drake shoes are only just clearing the drum i know they have self ajusting shoes but half the time they just dont work very well so ajust it by hand,, the front brake are disk's and they are self ajusting,,,
after doing this work leave the car for a minue or so and stamp on the brake to pump them out if you then need to pump the brakes up again that shoes its just ajusted the rear drums,,,the brake pedel should only ever need to be prest once never pumped up,, if this dont help you out and sort out the problem then and only then replace the master cylinder as there normaly very strong and dont brake down often and they often leak brake fluid first,,,my bet is its the rear shoes needing ajusting up

it could be that the master cylinder is bad or the brake booster is bad also check the vacum hose going to the brake booster if it has a hole in it it will lose pressure and make the engine lose rpms

Brake pedal wont hold when applied


After replacing the wheel cylinder, did you bleed the entire brake system? If not, do that first.
If you are still having problems with the brake pedal going to the floor after bleeding the system and there are no other leaks in the system, it is probably the brake master cylinder. Replace the master cylinder and follow the proper proceedures for that, including the bleeding of the new master cylinder.

Hi my name is Allen!

To change the rear wheel cylinders on your neon, first take the wheel and the drum off, next using the proper size line-wrench take the brakeline off the wheel cylinder, next take the spring off the upper part of the brake shoe and pry back on the upper part of the shoe's, this will give enough space to remove the wheel cylinder without taking all the other parts off the shoes, next, take the 2 bolts off the wheel cylinder that hold it into place and install the new one in reverse procedure.

Note: Do one side at a time, becuse this will make easier to bleed the system. once you have one side done with the drum back on and every thing tight, then you will need someone to help bleed the brakes.

Note: make sure you never run out of fluid in the master cylinder are you will have to start the bleed procedure all over again.

Note: Have the person helping you, pump the brakes 5 times then hold the brake pedal to the floor and make sure they hold it there until you have loosened the bleed nut and tightened it back up again, once you have done that, have them pump the brakes and hold it down again. Do this procedure several times making sure not to run out of fluid in the master cylinder. Once all the air is out of the system replace the other whell cylinder on the other side and bleed it the same way.

Note: make sure before bleeding the system that all components are completely installed, because if you try to bleed the system with the drums off and before placing the shoes back where they belong and installing the spring and drum the wheel cylinder parts will be pushed out of it.
