Question about Saturn SL2

1 Answer

I have a 2000 SL2 Saturn car- stick shift - I heard something "loose" under my car, it looks to be the heat shield - what are the chances it could be just a loose bolt? is it easy to fix yourself? or is it attached to something else that requires a pro? - If it is a loose bolt or something, any idea how much money and time it'll take??

If it's a heat shield, you can secure it using self tapping screws. If the shield is really rotted, you can just cut it off and forget about it. Not having it in place will make no difference at all unless you drive in high dry grass that can catch fire.

I have owned 4 saturns, and sundry other cars. The heat shields are made of very thin metals and are riveted or spotted on. Myself I have done enough business at a local repair shop that they will put it up on the lift, let me tear it out and throw it away. Takes just a few minutes and being up on a lift is faster and easier than trying to tear it out from the side or just up on a jack. I have never seen a bad side effect of loosing them, nor do my floor boards seem warm. If you ever walked or biked much on heavily used roads you would note these things are laying all over the place, crushed flat. There is generally a large shield riveted to the bottom of the car, and another attached around the outside of the converter. You have an 02 and it is time to replace the converter.

1993 Saturn sl2 will make rattling noise coming from under hood while sitting at a light with foot on brake if I put in neutral or park it stops and when I'm driving also what could be wrong with it

Chances are that a heat shield located under your exhaust or the catalytic converter has broke loose and rattles when you are idling in drive. This is common on older cars and is only usually noticed while idling in drive because the engine is working under a slight load and runs a little rougher. A good exhaust shop could probably fix it for very little.

P0404-This Relates to Performance or Range in Exhaust Gas Recirculation Control Circuit.Sometimes other parts of the vehicle systems just happen to fault about the time we have had something fixed and can be quite unrelated. But in this instance I would look around where the starter is located and the area that would have had parts removed or plugs, hoses shifted to get it out.Maybe there is a loose plug,a wire that has been strained and damaged,or simply hoses and plugs that haven't been refitted or have come loose on the EGR valve.Hope this helps,or get back with your findings under the bonnet.

The car is over heating even when i put water in

check to see that the thermostat is working. if its sticking coolant wont flow well.

if its working, the water pump has likely broken its impellers. check to see if there is good coolant flow. if not. replace the pump.

2001 Saturn SL Manual Transmission stuck in 2nd Gear

I had this same problem with my 1998 SL2 after about 170,000 miles. There is a plastic bushing at the end of the shifter cable that holds the cable to the shifter - it probably broke. Remove the center console inside the car to access the bottom of the shifter. I checked my local Saturn dealer to find the replacement cables (come as a set) are more than $200. So I went to Lowes and bought a beam clamp and a large washer to hold the cable to the shifter. It has been working fine for more than 28,000 miles and cost less than $3

I have a 97 SL2. Muffler "liner" falled?

You may be looking at the heat shield above the exhaust pipe. For the most part this is not an expensive fix unless you live in the socalled "saltbelt" where the salt from the snow removal eats away the mounting points on the shield.

1993 Saturn SL2 will not shift into highway gear

Saturn says and I quote

there transmission fluid is not to be changed after the first change at 6000 miles.

Now I say it should be changed at every 30000 miles. If changing out the fluid doesn't work then you need to go to a transmission repair shop.

What this code means is the trans is slipping, the most likely cause is internal parts failure or shift solenoid issue for 2nd gear, but based on what I know of this code you will end up getting the trans overhauled.
