Question about 1991 Honda Accord

1 Answer

During my traveling 40 miles each day to work and back, my 1991 Accord simply stops running while going down the road. I have to pull off the road and continue trying to start it, sit and wait, sometimes for 30 minutes or more of trying to get it to start, then it finally seems to get gase and start. The car does not make any noises when this happens, and while it's running, it runs great, but my problem is that it simply stops running while going down the road. It seems to be a 'hit or miss' in getting it to start again. I replaced the fuel filter, but that hasn't taken care of the problem. The fuel pump has never been replaced. The car has 314,000 miles on it.

Have you replaced the main power relay? It's what causes the 90's Accords to just suddenly shut off and not want to start back for a few. Also, how old is your distributor? It's another problem part on those Accords, that has all these sensors inside that go bad.

Why does my 93 Honda Accord run fine and then dies going down the road and will start again and die again?

There is a black fuel relay way up under the top left driver side dash that breaks its main wire solder connections on the circuit board under over-heat conditions. Resolder that relay. Starting fluid will show that you have lost fuel delivery under no start conditions. You can use the breather hose from the valve cover for this test.

Ask your local technician to set up a fuel gauge pressure monitor so you can track it while your driving. Ask him what the normal range is so you will know when it falls below. Document it and let your Tech know. It sounds like your fuel pump is loosing Pressure.

if its been a while change the fuel filter and then have the fuel pressure and volume checked.these symptoms are very common for a fuel pump problem.

I'd pull the AIS motor ( automatic idle speed ) of side of throttle body and give it and the port it comes out of a good spray of throttle body cleaner, especially the Pintle ( pointed part) and re-install it and try it. If it cures it great, and if it starts to act up again a while down the road, replace it. Also referred to as IAC sometimes.( automatic idle control)

Cheapest scenario is to change the transmission filter. That is if it is an automatic. When you do this, most transmissions have a magnet in the transmission pan. If yours has one I would check it for excessive metal shavings or worse metal chunks.

Temp gauge is rising at 3/4 of the way even while traveling down the interstate, once a/c was turned off it started to go back down but would still go up if sitting still running, what would cause this?

change the antifreeze and flush your system, its been hot lately so the motor heat goes up too, having the AC on makes the motor work harder, so thats normal that the temp would rise when its on. traveling on the road allows air to help cool the motor, sitting in traffic slows the air, so there again heat will increase

I recently bought a 1991 Ford Bronco to fix up. I got it running, and shortly after it died while I was pulling into a parking lot at work. It wasn't starting. Had the battery tested and it was fine....

That sounds like a bad ignition switch, which is located in the steering column on the right hand side, hope this helps, should fix both problems.

that is a very good posibilty of the fuel filter because when you let the vehicle sit the sediment in the filter will settle to to botom of the filter and when you drive the car you are disturbing the settlement getting it to float around. Please rate my solution and thank you
