Question about 1997 Lincoln Town Car

My car is spraying coolent out at the top of the engine, the top hose is hot and the bottom hose is cool. I have replaced the thermostat already now what can the problem be?

Leaking intake manifold or a heater hose. The heater hoses run from the back of the manifold throught the firewall.

Runs hot sometimes. Top radiator hose hot, bottom cold. What's wrong?


top hose should be hot, all water from engine goes through upper hose, then radiator to cool and out lower hose.

1996 chrysler cirrus heater fans not blowing hot air to vents or defrost. Not sure of actuator or thermostat. Since i dont know where they are. 2.5L V6 - 4 cylinder.


I will assume that your engine is full of coolent, and does not overheat. Now if your car takes like forever to heat up, It will be that your thermostat is stuck open, but after a while, you would have heat in your car. If your engine coolent hoses get hot, but your heater hoses do not, remove the heater hoses where they connect to the engine. This is the first place dirt, grime, and corrossion build up, stopping the flow of hot coolent from going through your heater core. (heater hoses stopped up at engine/waterpump connection.) Your heater core may also be stopped up if there is alot of corrossion present.

The thermostat is located directly under where your upper radiator hose connects to the engine.

Overheating


Most common reason for overheating is 1. low coolent lvl 2. faulty thermostat (stuck closed). 3. Faulty water pump preventing coolent from circulating through engine.

Check coolent lvl in radiator when engine is cool by removing the cap and filling it up till you can see the coolent, replace cap and try. If you have the proper lvl of coolent. Replace your thermostat, which is located under the thermostat housing (right underneith where your top radiator hose connects). Fill with coolent and see if that helps. Next test is to start the car and let it run till it gets to normal operating temp or near (180 to 220 degrees F) Pinch your upper radiator hose and see if you can feel a gush, or flow of water rush through the hose when you release your pinch hold on the hose, (by pinch, I mean to try and totally squeeze the hose together) If you don't feel the rush of coolent through the hose, then your waterpump is faulty. If your car quits overheating, but your heater hoses don't get hot, then they are probably stopped up at the point where they connect to the engine. Its a common area for gunk, rust, and corrosion to build up.

Changing coolent thermostat


take the cap off then sqeeze the top hose hold it then replace the cap then take it out thats how i do them but it also depends on what make and where it is the ones on the top of the engine are easy just do as i said and you will loose very little fluid

Air trapped in cooling system after new thermostat


I don't mean to sound insulting at all but I'm not certain what your experience is with engines.
Is it possible you put the thermostat in upside down?
Do you feel pressure on the top hose when you squeeze it? Does it feel pressurized? If so then the water pump is doing it's job.
Easiest way I have seen to "burp" a system after doing a coolant change or thermostat swap is to get one of the radiator caps that has a vent lever built into the top of it. This way once the engine is hot you can slightly pull that lever up and let it vent out the air a little bit at a time. Another way would be to to leave the radiator cap off. Start the engine and squeeze the bottom hose to burp the air to the top of the system. Hope this helps.

Drained radiator by disconnecting bottom hose then when i filled it back up only about hlaf as much coolent would go back in . The top hose gets hot but the bottom hose is cool to the touch could it be...


Hello! Thermostat needs to be replaced, but the cooling system should be "back flushed"...Go to a local auto parts store and purchase a back flush kit (under$10)
It's a plastic tee that is installed in the heater inlet hose... A garden hose connects to the stem of the tee and cooling system is flushed out of the top of the radiator...Let it run until clear...Install thermostat...Cap off the tee...Add a gallon of 50/50 and the rest with Distilled water...Leave the cap off until all air bubbles out (even after thermostat opens)...With heater set on high...Install cap when all air is out...Guru...Saailer

2004 Grand Prix GTP (supercharged.) After the water pump was replaced the temp gauge does not go above the 1/4th mark. I seem to remember that when the car was new new the gauge stayed at the 1/2...


How is the interior heat? Is it normal or are you only getting about 1/4 of what it used to be like when it was newer? Are you running a summer thermostat or a winter thermostate? The thermostat may be defective and not closing all the way and needs to be replaced or the Coolant Temperature Sensor may be Defective and needs to be replaced. I love these cars. OK you have done the engine side of things. If you have an electric radiator cooling fan make sure it comes on when radiator is hot, if not the fan motor is caned or the thermostat switch is faulty. Sometimes the fan motor is supplied by a fused/relayed circuit in which case these items will also need to be checked. Check that not only does the top hose from the engine to radiator get hot but that the bottom one does too. If not this would indicate a blockage perhaps in the radiator core due to sludge. If full of sludge give both ends a flush out with a high pressure hose. Like wise do the same with the bottom hose back to the pump. If the water is circulating and the radiator fan is working then the normal cooling system is working as it should. f the engine is running hot one last thing is to find the EGR valve and check that it is opening as it should. If not the combustion temperatures go very high. One indicator of a hot engine is blue/glazed spark plugs so take one out and check it for signs of hot running. If hot then look to clean the EGR valve and associated exhaust gas feeder pipe with frayed cable, cloth and and carb cleaner spray.

Radiator problems


it may be a little off, but the lower water hose seldom gets very hot,, as its this hose that suplyes the engine with ""cold water"" the hot water comes out the top hose,, drains down the rad and cools on the way down then enters the engine through the bottom hose """if your engine stayes running in the normal place on the gage,,,and not over heating""" why are you spending money for nothing???""
you wont get the bottom hose to run hot unless the engine is cooking

Engine overheating


The best way to flush it would be to take off the bottom radiator hose and pump water through the fill nozzle after all the coolent is out you can then hook the hose back up and replace it with new coolant.
