The first thing that you should do is replace the thermostat.

There might be a problem with the thermostat not allowing, or restricting the flow of coolant. Or your radiator might be full of deposits(deposits are caused over time by the insides breaking down, ie:metal) a radiator flush might be all you need. Some places offer this for fairly cheap, round $40. Some places charge alot because they can not recycle the coolant. Inquire with your local auto-parts store and see if they have any other recomendations? Advice is almost always free, and most of them can point you in the right direction of who might be the cheapest for good quality work in your area.

Basically, a radiator flush involves draining your old fluid. Putting in new fluid, running for a bit. Draining again, then filling with new fluid! That's about it.

The deposits in your radiator are blocking the holes for the coolant to flow through, thus there is less coolant flowing through the radiator to cool off before it goes to the motor to cool it off!

I hope this helps, and hope this is all your problem is! Good luck!

2006 Nissan X Trail---Why does rad fan seems to run a lot?

you may want to check to see if it is overheating causing the fans to run a lot, or you have a bad thermostat that is stuck closed and needs replacing. it also could be shorted to be powered constantly, maybe a relay problem, or even a bad cooling fan sensor that shows the engine temp hotter than it really is.

If it starts getting overheated right after being started cold and it's full of coolant the therostate may be stuck shut. If it has to run awhile and be under load the radfitor may be dirty or the coolant dirty or badly mixed. the raditor where the air goes thought it may need to be cleaned. If you have to sit still but if you k moving it's Okay then the fan ( It's electric) may not be coming on. You can turn the fan with your hand isee that it will turn ( they lock up) or you may have seen it running and know that this is'nt it. Itb shoud blow hard though and if it does'nt the high speed fan relay might be bad or the main fan fuse blown. If the fuse is blown the fan motor is likly to be bad evcen if it runs with a new fuse as the fuse blows as the motor heats up and draws more power.

1988 BMW 318i temperature guage flickers between normal temp. through to max temp. Most of the time the guage is 3/4 to Hot. Main fan seems a little loose when hot - not tightening up. Coolant level OK no...

It could be the impellor wearing out on the water pump, though I have not heard of this issue in your make of car, I have seen it first hand in other makes. The thermostat may not be opening up all the way, flow restriction,. The coolant temperture sensor could be going out, and the gauge in the dash could be going out. You could have flow restrictions else where in the engine. Have you ever had the engine flushed? these are the things that I can think of that would make your engine run hotter than normal.

Car overheated and antifreze was boiling and spewing over until engine cooled. 2004 jeep liberty 2wd. Thanks!

Need to know what caused the overheating, possible broken serpentine belt, thermostat, water pump, radiator, fan clutch, cooling fan motor. After motor has cooled down fill radiator with water till full, look make sure serpentine belt not broke, start engine run about 5 minutes, turn off, let sit 3 minutes, start engine look at temperture gauge is it over half way of gauge, Do you have a fan blade driven by water pump or electric fans?

Make sure you put in the correct temp thermostat. GM usually has 2. A low temp and a high temp. Most shops will give ya the high temp just because thats usually what the book calls for. you might want to try a low temp. Also, sometimes, when a car runs hot and everything has been repaired....well, almost might be the head gaskets. And those my friend are no easy task. But..somewhere to start. have your cooling system pressure tested. Only way to really know for sure. Oh..also make sure your fan is working!!!! You might have a faulty fan switch.
