The car is actually 1996 olds88 3800 series 3.8L. The fuel pump is working, runs 2 to 3 seconds when key is turned in the on position then stops. But the car wont turn over with the key. Also I hooked up the starter with two wires to bypass the key and with the key in the on position the car starts and runs for about 2 seconds and turns off. Then wont start again. The starter is working good, i had the car checked and the meter read fuel system too lean. I guess meaning not getting enough fuel. I suspect the Ignition switch located on the column and started to remove it. But dont know how I could actually pin point that as the problem. The car should still run if I bypassed the neutral safety switch. Could it be that the ignition is not putting out enough voltage to keep the fuel pump pumping, and the switch faulty and not turning the engine over?
I have the same car and HAD the same problem, but my car would turn off every couple days, and after checking my car the mechanic told me it was my crankshaft sensor, had it changed out and has not turned off on me since.
Have the key and ignition checked! I am assuming that the key has a security chip on it, Right? If so, re-program key at dealership, and if that alone doesn't work, have them check both the key and column.

Thank you. I did have the key problem fixed, the dealer did have to rekey it. But I also have a problem with hard starting. Had it checked, and they said it was running too lean, meaning it is'nt getting enough fuel at start up. I checked the injectors and blew out the lines, and the pressure regulator. Could it just have a weak fuel pump? After it finally starts it runs good on the road, but still has a problem starting. (plugs are good and gaped)
The car stalls and acts like it isn't getting fuel. I can hear the pump come on when I turn on or off the ignition, but engine doesn't get fuel.
