Have an A6 2001 Multitronic and the ESP light has, for the past 4 days, came ON. I have tried to scan, clear codes and clean the wheel sensors using methylated spirit but still the problem is there, any ideas please..

Sounds like one if your sensors are bad. Check wiring first, they use a real brittle wire that cracks & chaffes easily. Check them closely.

2007 Jeep Compass I have a ESP and ABS light on my dash, what can I do

Abs light comes on when a fault with the braking system is sensed usually a wheel speed sensor or sensors one to each wheel ESP uses the same sensors for traction control so start with the wheel sensors but get the codes read to find out which sensors are throwing faults could also be the connections or wiring to the sensors

My esp/bas light stays on

the operators manual is clear on that, did you read that first?
it says "get the car serviced" clearly
if you work on cars, do you? thne we scan the systems with the scan tool first. to see if there are complex hard errors.
like the ABS sensors, (not bas) sensor dead. (ops a road hazard hit it and broke the wire there, dang.
then if no hard failures.
first is not ESP (that be last dead last)
the first is , the brake must work perfect if not , the ABS can not
work correctly with bad brakes.
so check fuses.
scan ABS for errors
then do a full brake inspection, takes me 2 hours. but my guess,
youve never done brakes, right,, your self?
not even a full inspection?
  1. leaks? (fluid)
  2. pads worn out?
  3. caliper pistons not sticking
  4. rotors not cracked, or wrecked, surfaces.
  5. caliper guide pins not seized. (they float free?)
  6. emg, brake not sticking on partially?
  7. wrong sized tires on car (or just one , omg)
  8. ABS sensor parts damaged at axles ends.?
  9. bad wheel bearing, seizing or loose.
etc... etc.... and more.

Wheel alignment can make esp light comes on continuously?

Hi Rodney, I doubt that wheel alignment being out will cause an error code on the ESP. Have the vehicle diagnostically scanned. The problem may well be with one of the speed pick up sensors fitted to the wheels.Regards John

Esp light comes on after long journey

Hi there:
The "ESP" system helps correct oversteer and understeer by breaking the inner or outer wheel as needed to get the car back on a straight path. When the light flashes the "ESP" system has detected this condition and has momentarily engaged.

The fault can range anywhere basically from simply a failed brake lamp switch to anything like a failed wheel speed sensor,or brake pressure sensor etc. Check first to make sure you didnt accidently push the ESP on/off button on your dash which would cause this light to come on also. If thats not the case then you will have to have the code or codes read in your ESP control module (computer) to see what code or codes are set to be able to diagnose from here.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

What is the ESP for

Hi Derek:
ESP refers to the " Electronic Stability Program". Basically it is traction control for the vehicle; there are whell speed sensors at each wheel and steering angle sensor and a module that helps control the braking at the master cylinder. When the light comes on, indicates a problem was detected and has stored a trouble code in the computer.

If you were stuck in snow, turning the wheel some, wheel spinning etc, this could very easily kick the light on as the ssytem did not know how to react when a couple wheels were moveing and others not. The system was not synconized. This is most likely why the light came on. No damage was done. the worst i can think of is maybe some ice buildup on one of the wheel speed sensors but when the light goes on, the systme become inactive and just normal car control will occur. the light is designed to come on and stay on till the computer has been cleared of codes. A scanner is need to do this but, you can try removing the negative battery terminal for 60 seconds to clear the codes. In any case I do recommend a shop to read the trouble code via scanner jsut to be sure nothing happened. You should be just fine driving the car. you will not do any damge to anything and the car will not leave you anywhere.

The only thing is you may not have traction control so on sliperry road, be careful as it will not function as if it was working.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I'll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Why is my anti abs and trac control light on

Hi Deangelo:
The system has onboard diagnostics, the first thing would be to have it diagnosed by connecting a compliant code reader/scantool to get the codes, these codes can't be cleared by disconnecting the battery.

I could be of more help if I had the trouble code numbers and generally the wheel speed sensors is the problem; they are located on the axle bearing housings, have a 10mm bolt holding them on, they can be removed and cleaned without removing the wheels; it's unusual for both sensors to be doing the same thing so I really don't think that's the problem but you can try cleaning the sensors.

Scanned the ABS Module to know if some fault code is stored there, note this code number and keep us updated.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I'll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using Fixya, and have a nice day.

Both ESP and ABS dash lamps came on suddenly on my 2004 KIA Amanti.

The ESP light will come on whenever the abs light is on, this is due to the ESP system cant operate if the abs system is not working. The first thing you will have to do is scan the computer for codes. the computer will store a code whenever it sees a problem and then turn on the light to warn you theres a problem and then shuts down the abs system, there are many auto part stores that scan check engine lights for free as far as the abs system i am not sure you will have to check. the codes will tell you what part of the system has failed. for example there may be a code like C 1201 left front wheel speed sensor, this code will tell you theres a problem with the left frt sensor, it may be the sensor or the wiring or connector but with a little testing the problem can be repaired. the only thing is the esp and the abs are shut down, the car can still be driven you just wont have the abs. good luck and i hope this is helpful.

How do you shut off the ABS light after replacing rotors and pads on a 2000 Montana?

The main reasons why an ABS light is on is from the wheel sensors being dirty or needing to be replaced, each sensor cost approx. $49.00-$149.00 without labor. Cleaning them should cost about $50.00+.
if the wheel sensors test good(there are 4 sensors, one each wheel) the trouble may be in the BCM(Body Control Module) this would be a costly part approx. $400.00 used up to $1,000.00 new.
Happy Motoring!!
