How many times does a transmission supposed to shift starting from drive in a 1988 dodge ram with a 318 motor

Depends if you have a regular 3 speed automatic, or a 3 speed with overdrive.
Put it in drive, it will start out in first gear, then shift into second at about 15 MPH, into third at about 30-35 MPH. With overdrive, fourth gear will kick in at about 45-55MPH.

Overdrive not kicking in on 2002 rl

Overdrive comes in at about 42 mph unless you have
the gas pedal completely to the floor at a higher speed
& that is unlikely

Go to a trans shop, pick up their rebuilder or best guy or girl
& go for a ride

I need to know the location of the fuel pump relayn on 1988 toyota 4 cylinder pickup

The fuel pump relay is on the passenger side above the "ECM" (computer) you need to remove the speaker grill and take the speaker out to get to the FP relay, drop the glove box door go in with a 10mm socket w/ extension to the kick panel about where the top of the speaker opening is ,thats where its screwed to the panel, but you can see it as soon as you get the speaker out.

scan the computer with a computer scanner just to see what it says. check your intake, I am thinking your mass air flow sensor is no good. it happened to my car where the rpm increases and decreases when the car is idle. Or it can be the IAC valve.

Sputtering Engine

This is normal. Four cylinder engines do not have a lot of horsepower and torque.

When your a/c compressor and cooling fan kick on, there is a load on your engine that casues rpm to drop. When it kicks off, the load goes away and the rpms go back up.

Your a/c system is the cycling type that increases fuel economy. It should cycle 4 to 7 times/minute at 70 degrees F.

Please rae as fixed if this answers your question.

PS. With the a/c (and defrost) off, it should not drop any rpms.
