Question about 2001 Lincoln LS

2 Answers

Idling with bad mpg and slight engine ticking noise with engine light on. No loss of horsepower at all, runs smooth once accelerated. Checked codes that included misfire in cylinder 7 and running lean and rich. Changed O2 sensors and cylinder 7 coil and plug. Problem persisted even after repair and when switching coils.

You do not switch coils

If you have a bad coil, you have to
find out which one & replace it
Am I missing something here?

You replace the spark plugs (all of them)
every 70,000 miles. You use the OEM
NGK proper plug

You clean the MAF Sensor

Replace front 2 O2 Sensors only
at 100,000 miles

You could have EGR issues, vacuum leaks
from any number of places,as well as
EVAP System issues,even without codes

You really need to look at the data with
a professional scan tool, smoke the EVAP
and intake,check fuel pressure

Basically make love to it for a couple of days
Your problem is that not many people like
to work on the LS or most Fords

In this case i would say the engine valves are the problem.the ticking is a valve noise and points to a sticking valve.change the oil and use a sythathic oil it cost more but worth it plus change oil filter and ad a oil enhancer a small tub but worth it ,you will see the change right away.adrian

My 01 kia sportage makes a ticking noise under the hood when it is running ?

Check to see if there is any wobble in the crankshaft pulley, it should be spinning straight and true. If it begins to wobble, you may hear a ticking noise, a loss in gas mileage, and later the tick will become a knock. I had a similar issue with my 2001 Kia Sportage, and it turned out to be the crankshaft woodruff key.

This caused a miss-alignment which altered the correct timing, which in turn was causing the knocking, reduced MPG's, hesitation upon acceleration, and a slow return to idle RPM's. If this turns out to be your problem, the correct way to repair it is to replace the crankshaft, woodruff key, and possibly the pulley gear. Another option is a rebuilt, or crate engine, neither option is cheap. I chose a third option which some have claimed to have exceeded 60,000 miles using a carefully crafted, tightly fit, secondary woodruff key, and carefully bond the key in place, the gear to the shaft, all using JB Weld high temp two part epoxy, and let cure for 48 hrs. In my case so far so good. Gas mileage went from 12-MPG's to 19-MPGs, acceleration's back, and hoping for the best.
