Question about Dodge Dakota

2004 dakota a little white foam is in the oil fill tube i took it to a mechanic he said it moisture from hot engine cooling off overnight there was no coolant smell to it. no foam on the dip stick is this something i should be worried about. the mechanic told me not to

I would not worry till after the foam gets heavier and more frequent, then you may have a head gasket leaking. If you change your oil and check the level in the morning and there is still a foam on the dipstick I would monitor it frequently for excessive foam or swhite sludge, then worry about a leak.

White smoke is coolant burning. Check radiator for oil and check oil cap for foam if you have one or both not good.

Why would the transmission blowback from where you put the transmission fluid in


The most likely scenario is that it is foaming or is overfull.

Are you checking the oil level when the motor and trans are warm/ hot, the car is idling on a level surface? If you are adding trans fluid when the car is off and cold you are very likely overfilling it . If you are checking the oil level when the vehicle is idleing and warm and it is still blowing out of the dip stick tube , then check what the transfluid looks and smells like. It should be pink to light red and not smell "burnt".

Let the vehicle cool off, ( overnight) . Pull the stick and see if there is anything on the stick. If not, add fluid until it is just on the tip of the stick. If when cold the oil is on the stick, has a good appearance and is any where near the fill lines proceed to next step. If the oil is above the fill and full lines it is overfull and will foam up in operation. The excess oil must be drained.
Start the car and allow it to idle until it is warm. Pull the trans stick back out and see where the oil is on the stick. When warm and idling it should be in the area between add and full. if it's over those lines when warm, it's over full and needs to be drained to the correct level.

If the oil has a milky appearance it is contaminated with water or other substance; you need to take the car for service. It is likely the coolant from the radiator and the oil cooler for the trans have been leaking by contaminating each other. Both systems will need to be completely cleaned and the source of the leak will need to be fixed before the car is used again.

Wite milky resedue in the oil


Moisture/water in oil, all oils have a detergent additive to keep engines clean, if moisture gets in it foams up, sadly the main cause is cylinder head gasket, cooling system needs pressure testing or a hydro-carbon sniff test, Any other symptoms, water loss? running hotter than usual.

There's some rust on my transmission dip stick, what type of sign could this be? And I had the truck running for over 30 minutes idling, should the transmission fluid level be over the cold level and up...


If you are in Park, and running ... there is little activity in the transmission. I would say you are probably "cold" at this point. On the other hand, if you drive around the block, there is a lot of activity in the transmission and you are probably "hot". I wouldn't add any fluid based on your observation today. I would check it again tomorrow and see what the level is.

Here is a tip: Never add all you think you should at one time. It is a bear to get the fluid out and over filling is worse than being a little low. If you over fill, the tranny will whip the oil up into a frothy mixture, the oil will expand and do little lubricating. Frequently, when this happens, the oil runs out the fill tube onto the hot manifold and there is a fire as a result.

As far as the rust goes ... surface rust on the dip stick isn't much of a concern. It would tell me there is no oil coating on the bare metal. When moisture gets on metal - rust. So, how does the moisture get in to do the rusting? When your transmission is hot, the air inside gets hot and it expands. The extra air escapes out the fill tube and in come cases a breather. When you park, the machinery cools down, the air 'shrinks'. When this happens, 'fresh air' is drawn into the fill tube. Sometimes, the cooler air is heavily laden with moisture ... the moisture condenses onto the metal parts (and onto the oil) causing surface rusting. The water that gathers on the surface of the oil will eventually sink. Next time you go out, the machinery gets hot ... the water evaporates and mostly escapes out the fill tube with the hot air. When you turn the machinery off, ... this process starts all over again.

Does the trans cooler exist inside the radiator on this V6 engine/auto trans combo? I found a brown foam in my 2001 Saturn V6's coolant overflow tank. It was so thick, i could not read the coolant level. ...


hmmm..........there is a OiL COOLER tube for the transmission cooler in ur radiator, that to keep ur tranny fluid to cool down!

As u said, u checked the engine oil, and it has no decrease on oil level!

Ur right about that... better bring that to ur mechanic and evaluate the radiator, the tube inside might have been damage or corroded!

A little white on engine oil dipstick


That is a very bad sign. Is there any on the bottom of your oil cap? If there is or even if there isn't, white in the oil only means one thing. You have moisture in your oil. Have you had the oil pan off overnight recently? That sometimes lets moisture set up in the engine. If you havent had your engine open to let moisture in recently, then you have a cracked head. Hate to say it but there is no other explanation.

Loosing coolant. slow at first now more rapidly. No visiable leaks. Using red coolant. filled with water seems to foam at filling.could this be the water pump? Or is there another area to be conserned...


You may have a bad water pump, a bad coolant transfer tube behind the engine or a leaking head gasket. The foaming may indicate the head gasket. I would take it to a mechanic and get the head gasket integrity checked out.

If your oil is not over full its not getting any water in it..Sometimes oil gets moisture in it and it collects on the cap or if its a cheap oil it foams up a little.Nothing to worry about as long as your oil level stays the same..Don't worry be happy.Hope this helps you and have a great night..

This milky substance does not affect engine performance or any other functions of the vehicle. During cold weather, moisture contained in blow-by gases (exhaust , oil, fuel, water vapor) is cooled by the intermediate housing wall and condenses due to difference in temperature. A chemical reaction between the moisture reacts and the engine oil in the intermediate housing will yield the milky fluid. This fluid then eventually dissipates
as the engine warms up to full operating temperature.

The milky fluid does not affect the quality of the engine oil and therefore the engine performance is not affected either. Mazda has verified that the amount of moisture in the oil is within the acceptable standard for motor oils commonly found in the market.

However, you should verify that the coolant reservoir is full and that there is no sign of engine coolant leakage.

You can also go to you Mazda dealer and ask for a new oil level gauge tube plastic insert which has been developed as a countermeasure to keep the milky substance off of the dipstick (however, the substance will still be in there- it's a cosmetic fix only).
