Hi:) Some times when the distributor is put in by the book on a 350 cid engine the book tells people to do it backwards. It says to line up the timing marks and point them at each other that is not the compression stroke or top dead center the proper way is to line up the bottom gear pointing up and do the same for the top gear that is top dead center on the compression stroke then line up the rotor on the cap to number one spark plug wire as you are installing the distributor. If it is not done like this it will still start but run like "junk" and when you time with a timing light you have to remove the brown and beige wire in the wiring harness buy the brake booster and set the timing to "0" then when you shut the engine down and plug the wire back in and restart the engine the computer will set the timing for you thats all you need to do.

To be honest with you this dose not sound to good . Its a 91 engine and i asume a boneyard unless there is some kind of a fuel or air intake or computer combatabilty thing going on then the engine is likely the issue . Try doing a compression check on it look at the antifreeze to see what color it is dose it look good . If you bought it from a junk yard then they should have to warrenty it . But everybody knows its the labor that kills .If you could give me some more information about the engine mabey i could give you some more help with the problem its just kinda hard to say for sure at this point . Do some tests and get back to me Good luck

Usually this means that the timing needs to be set again, until it is 100% right.

  1. Remove the timing cover. This will allow access to the timing chain.
  2. Crank the engine until the timing marks on both sprockets are nearest each other and in line between the shaft centers.

Here's a diagram -- often these are as good as pictures --

The "A" points to the 2 timing marks visible in the photo above.

1992 gmc suburban has no power and bogs in cold weather

You need to perform an OBDII diagnostic test and look at the stored faults. Sounds like a temp sensor or Mass Airflow Sensor. Also dirty air filter needs to be changed every 40,000 miles. be sure to delete stored faults and recheck OBDII periodically for new faults.

Dash lights won't come on 1997 gmc sierra 1500 what could be wrong? We've checked the fuse and bulb.

They are notorious for burning out. It is usually the power supply on the main board in the dash cluster. You can find a rebuilt one on ebay but they are not cheap. But they are a lot cheaper than a new one. Read the ebay add closely as there is a refundable core charge on the rebuilt ones.
Good luck

Stock horsepower - 1984 GMC C3500

I own a shop, and build a lot of these engines. I have a race car & truck in which I built, so horsepower is something I know a little about. Most of these engines are rated around 190 - 200 horses, but when put on a dyno can be as much as 225, or as little as 175 or 180. Since its a truck engine it has more torque than an engine that was put in a car, and it also should be a four bolt main engine. The good thing about this engine is; One can get a lot more out of these with a little work. Matter of fact, its not that hard, or expensive to see as much as 400 horses from that engine, when rebuilt with some high performance parts. One can add just a few things such as headers, good intake, dual exhaust, flowmaster mufflers, and a better igniton system, and hit 300 - 325 pretty easily. Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!
