I put a new engine not a rebuilt in 1992 gmc c1500 5.7 it has no power . why not ??

Hi:) Some times when the distributor is put in by the book on a 350 cid engine the book tells people to do it backwards. It says to line up the timing marks and point them at each other that is not the compression stroke or top dead center the proper way is to line up the bottom gear pointing up and do the same for the top gear that is top dead center on the compression stroke then line up the rotor on the cap to number one spark plug wire as you are installing the distributor. If it is not done like this it will still start but run like "junk" and when you time with a timing light you have to remove the brown and beige wire in the wiring harness buy the brake booster and set the timing to "0" then when you shut the engine down and plug the wire back in and restart the engine the computer will set the timing for you thats all you need to do.

To be honest with you this dose not sound to good . Its a 91 engine and i asume a boneyard unless there is some kind of a fuel or air intake or computer combatabilty thing going on then the engine is likely the issue . Try doing a compression check on it look at the antifreeze to see what color it is dose it look good . If you bought it from a junk yard then they should have to warrenty it . But everybody knows its the labor that kills .If you could give me some more information about the engine mabey i could give you some more help with the problem its just kinda hard to say for sure at this point . Usually this means that the timing needs to be set again, until it is 100% right.

1. Remove the timing cover. This will allow access to the timing chain.
2. Crank the engine until the timing marks on both sprockets are nearest each other and in line between the shaft centers.
