What mileage can I expect from a 4x4 rear differential? Should it fail at under 100,000 klms?

yes the diffs have known failures but no recalls
and its blamed on harsh treatment or poor maintenance

its a kia diff its a light weight SUV type vehicle design not a robust commercial diff
fit an upgraded diff to something more robust
and spend the extra money

no likely for kia to have one but if
if it was a vacuum diff design then yes it could fail

Chevy tahoe gear differential

remove the drain plugs from the diff units and check for metal bits. Check for metal in the transfer case oil as it sounds like a bearing in the diff section of the transfer case has failed.. There is a small diff here to allow the front wheels to travel at a different speed to the rear unit to allow for driving over un even surfaces or speed bumps.

Differential oils

Use standard 80-90 OEP diff oils in standard diff and special oil if diff is limited slip unit as oep oils will destroy a limited slip diff.

Minor leak from rear hub on hz75 landcruiser.

Looks like a hub reduction gear in their but the half shaft has a paper gasket so no problem their ,pair of sissors and a ball bearing to make the holes this is a simple job but when you do this look on top of the diff unit and make sure the breather on the top of the diff unit is clean and not caked up with mud. Then another trick that only us old time truck fleet fitters would do is make sure that you pump some grease into the diff unit LM grease is best ,about half a grease gun full is sufficient as this will get hot and go around inside and deposit on the coolest areas like the pinion seal and down the half shafts stopping a lot of worn seal type leaks ,but make sure the breather is clear whatever you do

1984 f-150 front diff is leaking

As this is such a old motor its not worth repairing properly ,what you do is to get a grease gun and remove the end nipple clamp then fill it with lm grease and pump this into the diff unit via the top up plug ,about a tin of grease or one complete grease gun full and this circulate and slow down any leaks by blocking the gaps ,it will not damage the diff

My 2003 chevy s-10 pickup has push button 4x4. 4 hi and 4 lo do not engage when button is pushed. Truck kinda jolts like its kicking in but front tires won't spin. Is this a cheap fix or something major?

It may be cheap... There is an actuator on your front diff that pushes a pin into your diff to engage the gears. Check the connections & the unit, U will need 2 people for this. 1 under the diff to watch/listen and the other to push the buttons

1996 jeep cherokee laredo front differential is broke what do i do to fix and how hard is it. should i replace the whole axle unit or just the differential

If you can get hold of the complete front diff housing, including all the brakes etc,it is a lot easier to do the change. On the other hand,if you have a good workshop and know the steps to take, replacing just the diff centre is a bit cheaper.By a good workshop I mean, hoist, air tools good lighting etc. Both jobs require approx.3hours and a good helper makes the job a lot easier.Without a good workshop I would go with replacing the entire unit.Make sure the brakes are in good condition clean and all the air bled out of the system.Replace the diff oil using l/s diff oil.Hope this helps

4wd works but light flashing in 4wd high and low

The front diff engages drive with air pressure supplied by a pump behind the front bumper. Air is supplied to the diff through a pressure switching/valve unit and rubber hoses to the diff that run under the car. These can be damaged whilst off-roading and the pump unit will have to remain on for longer to maintain 4WD. The loss in pressure or the longer time that the pump is on for is reflected in the flashing 4WD lamp. I'd be checking all hoses and connections under the car. The other thing that may have happened is water may have got into the switching unit and it is giving an error code.
