Question about Toyota 4Runner

I have a 1988 toyota 4runner 4wd (not sr5 or trd) with manual locking hubs. when in 2H it runs great but in 2H with the hubs locked i get loud clunking sounds while driveing straight and while turning. it also does the same thing in 4L and 4H with the hubs unlocked. and the cv boots are not torn and look fine.

Sounds like a cv joint that is lacking grease. Try poking a small hole in the boot and using a grease gun to fill boot with grease. To seal hole a small dab of automotive silicone over hole. If still clunking possibly still could have a bad axle.

Is my 4 wheel drive mechanical or electriacal 1995 4runner


that's funny, there is no electrical 4wd, its got gears.
all have gears.
what some do is have electric acatuators to shift or just to
engage front locking devices.
who to tell on old car>
1: look, is the front axle with outboard hub lockers, manual; or auto?
bingo 100% mechanical,
under newer cars the front axle (look at it) see motor pump or vaucum
lines that run the auto locking axle.
2: look at shifter, is it a lever, , with linkage to transfer case, bingo mech. if only switches, its electrical.

I see manual locking front hubs, (no elect)
and the transfer case?
most are linkage
but there are 2 transfer case options
RF1A (counter gears) or VF1A planetary gear reduction unit. transfer case.
the dash has a simple idiot lamp that means the tranfer
case thinks its in 4wd but never really knows for sure.
its just a switch. i never look at it. i feel my gears at all times
by seat of pants.

Different 4wd settings


you should have 2 hi 4 low 4 hi and nuetral on your transfer case 4 hi would be anything up to 35-40mph or lower 4 low is almost never used it just gears down your t case if your climbing a hill or super stuck the manual locing hubs are extremely reliable do not have them locked on dry pavement or concrete just loose dirt snow ice ect put the tranny gear shifter in nuetral to put your t case in 4 low

Driver door is unlocked (other door locks don't matter) 2. Insert the key into the ignition (don't turn it) and pull it out. 3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds: a. Cycle the power locks 5 times. Use an even pace and try to go relatively fast. b. Close, then open the drivers door. 4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds: a. Cycle the power locks 5 times (same as before). b. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF. c. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF. d. Remove the key from the ignition. 5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should cycle (automatically) indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1 if the locks do not cycle at this point. 6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds: a. Press the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter simultaneously for 1 second. b. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons, press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds. Within 3 seconds, the door locks should cycle ( LOCK then UNLOCK) once-- indicating successful programming. If the door locks don't cycle, or cycle twice. Repeat steps 6a and 6b--this remote has not been accepted. c. Repeat steps 6a and 6b for EACH transmitter that will operate the vehicle. Including any old transmitters. 7. Close the driver door. 1996 Toyota 4runner 4 Wheel Drive Problem


Auto hubs locked up? Electrical relay faulty? May need servicing.
ToyotaED would be the EXPERT to ask on this one.

Look for damaged wires, or something bent, on the Auto Disconnect Device on the front axle before you do anything else. The 4WD HI light is not coming on because the front diff is not engaging.
Re 4 LO: In 4 LO, you ar NOT getting "4 LO", what you are really getting 2WD LO, because of the output gearing of the transfer case.
In any case, your front diff is not locking in, in either mode. The A.D.D. controls the 4 Hi lite.

I would first check the wires on the transfer case for possible damage at the 2wd/4wd switch.
