It sounds like there is a short in the switch that turns the interior lights on beside the headlight switch. You might be able to get a switch after market from your local auto parts store. Possibly with it being an 01, it would be a dealer item. Try calling parts store/dealer to see if you can locate one. Hope this is helpful. Please rate. Thanks

I have had the exact same problem. There is an ignition lock that probably went off. There is a fuse box under the hood. The fuse that says ignition on it pull it out and put it back in. This should reset the ignition lock. Its a safety feature because the car thinks that someone was trying to tamper with it.

I have a 2002 sunfire... and i have trouble turning it on. Once it startes it is stuck there because it will not turn at all. Once it is in this position the wipes wont work, the windows wont roll down,...

sounds like you need a new ignition, reason nothing works cause once it doese turn over n starts the car the tumbler is stick in the starting position jus not far enough to keep the starter engaged but far enough the it still trying to go trough the start process which cuts the power to everything else till the ignition returns to the on postion

did you try jus turning the ignition far enough to when the starter engages jus let go of it so the car doesnt start and see if everything else still doesnt work if it dont i belive its the igniton

also with out starting it or engaging the starter as in just turning the key on to get power does anything work?

My 2001 sunfire 2.2 will not shut down have to pull off battery post when back on car just keeps running thought maybe ignition switch is that hard to change.. new battery & starter they r...

To change the ignition switch you need to remove the cowls around the steering column to expose the ignition switch. Once you have done that re-insert the key and place it in the ACC position (this is the position for most switches). Look around the lock housing to locate a pin or tongue in the housing, With the key in this position, it should be possible to extract the lock and switch with the steering lock attached. On most vehicles it will be possible to change the switch only, but some the whole mock mechanism will have to be replaced as a unit.

New starter and battery but starter won't engage

Check the wires that go to the starter to the battery. You have a bad connection on that line probably. Check the ignition switch also. Questions? I am here to help. Write me.

1997 Pontiac Sunfire 5 speed 2.2 L engine What would cause starter to stay engaged trying to turn car over even when key is not in ignition?

The soloinoid is getting power from somewhere to enable starter to try to start vehicle. Could be a short to the starter.

Car will not start. Battery good, starter good. Managed to start car jumping starter. Ignition relay appears to be getting voltage in, and out of when switch is turned on. Jumped clutch switch out of...

When you turn the key, does the starter relay click? Could be the heavy connection from the battery to ground or to the starter solenoid. Make sure these connections as well as the battery terminal connections are clean and tight.

We put the key in the ignition switch cylinder and it wont turn. what could be the problem and how hard would it be to replace the ignition switch and cylinder on a 1996 pontiac sunfire

It could be numerous problems, the battery, alternator or starter, If its making a clicking sound its probably not the battery. But if its not making a sound at all then its more then likely the battery

sounds like your alternator. if you have a multimeter then turn on your car and turn your headlights on/ac and heater fan on high/wipers on and blinkers on. once they are all on hook the meter to the battery and if it reads less then 14 volts then the alt is bad. or you can just take it to a shop and have it tested.

I have a 1997 pontiac sunfirebird car and it will not start. the battery has been replaced and so has the starter. can you help me?

It is probably the Passlock sysem, Put the key in the ignition in the off position for about 10 minutes and then try and start it. If it still will not work, take it to the mechanic, It may need to be replaced like mine did.

Hope this Helps.
