The hub has no play up and down. Could it possibly be the bearing where the axle enters the transmission? Thanks for the advice

It could be a wheel bearing, you might test for play by grasping the tire at the top and bottom and trying wiggling it. A bad wheel bearing wont always have slack, but if it does, that would be a good indicator, also during a test drive, the howling sound would get louder turning one way and quieter the other.

The problem is more likely a wheel bearing than a problem with the transaxel. If I were to test drive the car, I would bring it to 25 or 30 mph and turn the steering wheel left and right quickly, to load and unload the faulty bearing. One direction will make the sound louder the other would make the sound quieter. If you were to do this you would know exactly what I am talking about. If I had your car in my shop, elevated, I would use a stethascope at the bearing hub to listen for the sound. The wheel bearing in your car is replaced as a hub assembly, costs around $100 and is a bolt in part . No machine shop presswork required. As always, be careful working under under an elevated vehicle.

Sounds like a bad hub bearing ! This is the bearing that the cv axle goes through ! If bad you will need in most cases to remove the k uckle and take to a machine shop to have a new bearing pressed in ! Some hubs are a bolt in which you can do at home !

Humming noise coming from front end. It starts about 20 mph and the pitch gets higher as speed is increased?

More than likely it may be a wheel bearing, if the sound gets louder. Jackup the side where you think the sound is coming from, and spin the wheel to see. You can jack up one tire and get in vehicle put foot on brake start engine then put it in drive with foot on brake, release brake slowly. Wheel will spin and you can tell if thats the one.( put E-brake on first ) Let down and do the same on the other side to check it. As long as one wheel is on the ground the car will not move. Then you can tell if its a wheel bearing or not. God-Bless you and your family!

Whining noise progressively gets louder with speed

One wheel turning faster than the other is normal if both wheels are off the ground. If one wheel is dragging when the other wheel is on the ground, it could be brakes or a wheel hub bearing.
Usually if the noise happens on right turns, the left hub bearing is failing, and vice versa.

This might be a wheel bearing problem. All of your symptoms point to this except for the noise going away when the tires were changed. If you jack your car up and spin the tires by hand sometimes you can find one that is louder and sounds rougher than the rest. This indicates a faulty wheel bearing.

You probably have a bad hub bearing. If you can change the noise by slightly turning the vehicle one way or the other it is a hub bearing. If you turn left and the noise is still there then it is the right front bearing. If you turn right and the noise is still there it is the left side.If it makes the noise both ways it could be both front hubs.Hope this helps.Good luck.

The car makes a howling noise while driving it

well did the noise start after the tires were rotated?could be choppy tires,,,if not ,i strongly think it sounds like a bad wheel bearing,,,,if you drive and while its making the noise turn left and right quick and see if the noise gets louder and which way turning makes it louder,,if you turn leftand it gets louder its usually the right wheels bearing as you are putting load on it, if it makes the noise louder while turning right its the left wheel bearing,,,got it
