Question about 1989 Cadillac Seville

2 Answers

I have a 1989 Cadillac Seville. I've had the car for 6 years. The other day my DIC told me "Engine Hot AC Compressor Off" In the entire 6 years of owning this vehicle the A/C has never worked, but have always received an "AC Compressor Off" message when turning on the heater. This is the first time it has been preceded by "Engine Hot." I'm not sure if this is a problem or not, and am having difficulty figuring out if it is, as my Cadillac manual acknowledges the existence of the message, but not what to do when it shows up. My Seville normally runs between 204 to 212 degrees F (which I've heard is a bit high), but having checked after receiving the message, gradually goes up to about 251 degrees, at which point it almost immediately goes back to around 208 degrees and stays there. What should I do/not do?

251 degrees is way too hot-so it's basics time, how long has it been since you have replaced the thermostat, or changed the antifreeze? At that temp, you could do major damage to the heads, head gasket and even the engine, so you really want to have the entire cooling system gone over-you coolant fan may be failing, or an engine control (like a relay for the cooling fans, even the engine computer)-it should be gone over sooner than later since overheating is the worst thing you can do to an engine.

The thermostat was replaced about 2 years ago, and the antifreeze was changed about a month ago. Clearly I need to take the car into the shop and get it fixed. Thanks Mike.

because it goes all the way up to 251 then down to 208 there is a possibility the ECM is defective-the fan should go on low speed at 223 and high speed at 232, so obviously something major is wrong-the ECM, temp sensor, radiator cap, fan itself, fan relay, radiator, heater core, thermostat, all are suspects-but are you sure you have the proper level of antifreeze in it, in volume and mixture? In think about this, I wonder if there isn't an air pocket in the system...check level when the engine has been sitting overnight, use a 50/50 mix (it should be Dexcool), and when it warms up (after being driven) the cooling system should be under pressure-squeeze the top hose, you should not be able to collapse it when hot, I think the cap is 18 lbs/in pressure.

I have one of these sevilles and they will do that if the engine is not full of coolant.. Undo hose to intake manifold at the three way connector just behind throttle body. Pour coolant down hose to intake until it runs out the connection point of the three way tee. Do this when engine is cold. The ac compressor will be told by the computer not to come on even if it does not work when engine is hot. The compressor off message will come on if the freon is low in the ac system. It can be reset if you clear the BCM codes to come on. This can be done from inside the car.

normal temp is 195 to 215 on a hot day. Cooling fans should come on a 225. If not you may need a cooling fan module. It's under the hood lock .$$$$ new. The information center should tell you if it is bad though by saying cooling fan fault.

AC on 1999 Oldsmobile intrigue not working correctly.

the air feels hot ( compressed) because the ac compressor is not working
you say that occasionally it kicks in and then the air is cold
that could be either a climate control module , thermostat compressor relay problem but which ever way you look at it it will cost cash
the best way is to have the problem properly diagnosed by an accredited ac specialist shop and get a quote and then decide on the fix

A/c compreesr cluth stays on but no cool air

You replaced the ac compressor, and the clutch stays on, but the compressor does not run ???
Not sure I am following your info here.
If the ac clutch stays engaged the compressor should be running. You should have one hot and one cold ac line and the radiator fan should be running.

Serpentine belt broke, and I am told I need a new compressor. We found one but it is from a seville with a northstar engine. Can I use this? Thank you

Hello: All Cadillac Devilles had a Northstar starting in 1996. It will not make any difference if it is a SLS (275 HP) or a STS (300 HP)

'96 seville sls 4.6L, a/c seems to have a blocked passage. high presure line is hot, gauge has 300# on a 80 deg. day, the line just after the orifice tube is cold until freon enters the evaporator, gauge...

what makes u say ur ac refrigerant has a blocked passage? check the low pressure line by touching it with ur hand while ac is running/ it has to be freezing cold/ if not cooling it means ur compressor is weak and or refrigerant is low/ high pressure line is normally hot/ check ac magnetic clutch operation must engage when ac switch is on and disengage when ac is turned off/ check ac condenser must be blocked and needs cleaning....

When i start up my 98 cadillac deville there is a loud whining noise from the ac compressor. Will my car run without the ac compressor or will i need to spend the money to replace it?

The car should run okay without the compressor, you just won't have A/C. The cooling fans should still operate with the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor. It is also possible that you just need to charge the A/C system. A loud whining noise is indicative of low charge to the compressor.
