Question about 1999 Ford Explorer

1 Answer

My check engine light is on. I had Autozone test it and they said the TPS. I replaced it and the light is still on and Autozone test still shows the TPS. Where does the other end of the wiring harness attach too?

Auto zone put a code reader on your vehicle,
not a professional scan tool, that shows the data
seen by the vehicles computer

The TPS Code or any codes,do not tell you
to replace anything
The Codes are sensors reporting an out of
range condition

All the fuses, relays, codes and other info that you see
on this web site and others ,is making things worse
and confusing for the vehicle owners.

Most suggestions are really good advice.
This is a social web site. Everyone is at home
and do not get paid to answer anything. You can
do the same here, on any subject you know

To answer, where do all the wires go in the TPS
harness.
Vehicle are very complex and have a couple miles
of wire.
To work on todays vehicles you need a lot of knowledge
and wiring diagrams and trouble charts, as well as
4 pieces of test equip totalling around ten thousand
dollars. Without the schematics, knowledge and test
equip, your not going to do anything at all.

You now should, and I will say unfortunately, have
to have a repair shop check out your issues.

2006 explorer with 68000 miles stalled last night. wrench light and check engine lights came on. now, just check engine light. mechanic says throttle sensor needs to be replaced. does computer need to also...

You can buy the TPS Sensor, at any auto parts store, and install yourself.
Just two torx screws ,T-20 I believe, About $78.00,check NAPA.com etc.

No reprogramming of PCM. Don't know where that came from.

You better have a TPS Code set, or know how to test it.
Even the pros throw parts at vehicles, without testing first.
Test it and do yourself.

Have been told the TPS is bad. NOw the car will

This can be the problem. The TPS is the part that replaces the Carburetor throttle. The TPS also regulates the spark and the timing advance.

This is a very easy part to replace. The part is on the drivers side of the engine behind the plastic ductwork from the airfilter. The TPS attaches to the metal hornshaped part. It has 2 screws and 1 electric connector.
The TPS is about the size of a Butane lighter.

If you go to Autozone or Oreillys they will scan you engine for free. They can verify your problem. After you fix your car you can return to Autozone and get your computer reset to remove the "Check Engine" light if it is on. Or you can remove a battery cable for 10 minutes and the warning will go away.

The TPS screws are on tight and you may need a pair of pliers to grip the screwdriver to turn it. But there is only a groove under the TPS to match up with a mating part on the Airhorn. Its about a 20 minute job to remove and replace. With Autozone or Oreillys scanning your car, you won't have to buy unneccessary parts.

I have a linconl navigator and it keeps cutting off on me while is running and its also smells like gasoline when i first turn it on. i think it could be a fuel injector that is bad but am not sure

Check out TPS. You do not have to replace the whole throttle body,as the dealer will tell you. Scan it first and don't just replace parts, based on codes you get. Test each offender individually .

Can I use my didgital multimeter to test my check engine light on a 93 mercury topaz?

I dont beleive you can BUT you can check the sensors(O2,map,knock,tps etc) that are setting off the check engine light with your multimeter. You have to find the manufacturers output specs on each sensor(which unfurtunately I dont have). You put your ground lead to ground and your positive lead to the voltage wire on each sensor (with multimeter on voltage setting) If you take the car to AutoZone or Pepboys they'll scan the check engine code to ID the sensor for FREE

Code 16 on a 1990 olds cutlass ciera

Code 16 on my repair manual shows a low voltage to the ECM (computer). Try cleaning the 2 fuse connectors that supplies battery voltage to the ecm. The fuse box is on the front drivers side of the engine compartment. I have the same problem with my car with a intermitten fast idle and check engine light.

2003 GMC throttle position sensor

I had the same problem with my 2003 denali and came to find out that it was the battery causing the problem. the battery with sufficient power will dictate the tps. if the battery is low or bad, it won't have enough juice to allow the tps to. work. get your battery checked.
