Question about Toyota 4Runner

1 Answer

Hi, I have a 2003 toyota 4runner v8 with about 120k mi. on it, and have a steering problem. The steering wheel is hard to turn as if there is no power assist, alternating between hard and normal. I had noticed it slightly when I last drove it 2 weeks ago, but has now gottten much worse. This is my wifes truck and of coarse she didnt say anything about it ? I checked the steering fluid and the level is ok but the reservoir is blackend. Just looking for some 411 on the issue so I dont get hosed by a mechanic. Thanks

If you check the fluid leves and this is OK, them likely means something came loose in the pump. The only way to be sure with out replacing the pump is take it to a shop where they can hook up a pressure and read pump out put pressure.

Check if you havebits of metal in the fluid sounds like something in either the control valve or steering gear has broken down, this could go to bad sttering pump.

with the wheels on the ground, if you pull really hard on the steering wheel will the wheels turn?

Since you already replaced the pump the only thing left is the rack and pinion.

Right front tire inside balding, shakey steering wheel at higher speeds. Any input?

Hi,
This sounds like the wheel balance is out and /or the tracking is out. You need to take it to the tyre shop and ask for the front wheels (both ) to be tracked and balanced. This should cure the problem.
Good luck

1995 toyota 4runner, ignition switch stuck in lock, cannot get in acc. to remove and replace. have tried normal repair procedures with no success.

Make sure that you steering wheel is not putting too much pressure on the lock. If your wheels are cramped it can make the key switch turn very hard. On one occasion, I had to hold the steering wheel with both hands and have someone else turn the key.

Try jerking the steering wheel as your turn the key. Sometimes when you park and the wheel locks up you have to play with it to get it unlocked.

2003 4 Runner has resonate vibration in steering wheel

If yours is a 2003, you might look at changing the power steering fluid. I have a 97 Accord that would start jerking the steering wheel back and forth after it had warmed up. Replaced axles and didn't work, but replaced the fluid and it hasn't happened since. Wouldn't be hard or expensive to try. Just be sure to use the right fluid.
