It could be a faulty clutch master cylinder, there is a valve in the master cylinder that traps the fluid to be displaced to the slave cylinder. If this valve is not trapping the fluid or if the rod connecting the clutch pedal to the master is not properly adjusted, the clutch wont fully disengage, causing the symtoms you've discribed.

Try putting pressure on the gear shift while letting out the clutch. When you feel the gear shift move a little push the clutch back in.

2004 dodge ram 1500 with the 3.7L V6 5 speed manual. The truck drives and shifts fine but after driving for a while it won't be able to shift into or out of any gear.

the reason for hard shifting and selection when running is that the clutch shaft ( input shaft) is still turning even though the clutch pressure plate is released
it can be from oil/grease on the fly wheel /pressure plate face causing it to stick when hot
it may be from sticking clutch plate on the splines binding when hot
or it could be a dry spigot bush or failed bearing in the end of the crankshaft that positions the clutch shaft
check the pedal height adjustment and the position it is from the floor when starting to engage
It may be adjustment under the dash

How do I fix my car having problems shifting into first gear?

I'm assuming that this is a manual transmission.
Old truck drivers trick...... Push in the clutch just as you try to put it into gear. If you do it too soon, it may make a grinding noise. Practice..... Thr trick is to have the transmission just barely rotating as you're grabbing the gear. Older vehicles can develop shifting issues as the synchro rings get worn. Pretend you're a trucker and feel the shift happen.

20004 Saturn i am having shifting problems will not go into gear smoothly,if at all . 5th gear in nearly impossible to find with out grinding . Is it the shifter ,clutch or clutch pedal not engaging?

Possible causes are: The clutch is going out, the hydraulic clutch system is low on fluid, or the transmission input shaft is binding on the pilot bearing. 1. Is the pedal firm and does it feel like it used to? (low fluid). 2. Once in gear and moving push on clutch and notice when the transmission disengages. If it does not disengage until the pedal is almost at the top then the clutch is getting thin and will need replacing. 3. With vehicle on a smooth flat surface, depress clutch and try to shift into any and all gears. Notice if vehicle tries to lurch forward as shifter goes into gear. This may be a subtle lurch but should be noticeable. This checks for a binding pilot bushing. Let me know what you find. Thanks and please rate.

I have a '99 Saturn SL1 5 speed manual transmission. i was teaching my son to drive. he was at a stop sign and put it in first and when he tried to go, there was a bang, the shifter shot back into...

With an assistant check to see if the shifting cables are moving the arms on the transaxel, if not then it may be a broken cable. The most likley is there is something broken in the drive line, [ clutch, input shaft to Trans, final drive gear[s] in Trans, Axel shaft, etc.] First look to see if the the axels are bad. Then you can check the final drive by jacking up one front wheel [ making sure the other is firmly on the ground ] and try to rotate the lifted one, it shouldn't spin. You can see if the clutch or the input shaft is bad by putting the car in gear and seeing if you can push the car with out the engine rotating. Any of the problems will be costly to repair, axel and cable the least.

My1989 fordf150 runs but it wont go into gear

If your F150 is standard shift, don't try to put first gear with the motor running, you might brake some gears in the transmission. Probably you have a worn out clutch disk. To diagnose this you could try to put your truck in first gear with your motor off, push the clutch and start it, CAUTION, if the cluthc is not working your truck will go foward. Don't be afraid, try doing this on an open space or road with little traffic. Then you you feel you got to change to second gear, get your foot off the gas and inmediatelly shift to second gear having in mind not to force the stick if it sound, feel the stick until it goes easily to second gear. If you accelerate and the truck does not slips and has power accelerating, the disk is working fine, but if you feel it slipping and your revolutions go up but the truck stays more or less in the same place, you have a default clutch disk.

No if yoou feel no pressure on the pedal, this is the pressure plate has no strength, this is a default pressure plate. If you feel the clutch strong but when you push it it sounds like a broken bearing, this is the pressure plate bearing that is bad.

Ok, to change this you must lower your transmission, then take the clutch assembly from the motor. It is good to have a center shaft to re-install the clutch. After you remove the transmission, you take out the clutch case. Here it is recommended to check the rear clutch seal to avoid future ooil leaks. Then remove the pressure plate with the bearing and the disk is inside next to the flywheel.
By what you told us, your truck must be a standard shift. Because if this happens in an automatic transmission, probably the planetariums are damaged inside the transmission.

Manual transmission is hard to shift into gears, when car is not running it shifts between gears smoothly, when it is running you have to push or pull extremely hard to force into gears

It sounds like your clutch may not be releasing full. Does it shift easily if you match the speed of the engine and transmission shaft closely? Does the clutch feel normal?

My 1991 Subaru Legacy won't go into gear

Does it go into gear ok when its not running? When its running does it grind when you try to put it in gear? Does clutch feel firm or soft when you push it in? If you can shift all gears when its not running then its a clutch problem. If you can't than its a transmission problem. Is it a hydrolic clutch or mechanical? I can only guess and i won't do that, i need this info to help you.
