Key fob problen - this is the 3rd time I have written the problem - site is not user friendly in that aspect. 1st fob problem 2 wks ago - fob wouldn't lock car. Left it that day and eventually it worked. 2nd problem last wk - fob unlocked car, then set off alarm. Finally got alarm stopped after many minutes. Car wouldn't start (prob due to alarm time). Then after 1-2 hrs it started. Took it to long-time mechanic (not dealer). He's had it 3 days while he gets through previous jobs. He said he could fix it, but maybe not get alarm features back. Car has not started at least once while mech moves cars around lot. Both fobs work (or don't work) about the same. Fob batteries are new, even replacing batteries that were only 1 yrs old. Mechanic said that "updates" should have been done, sounding like this involved PC software update. IMHO, this shouldn't apply since car and fob are same vintage (11 yrs old). Wonder if this is a job for the dealer. Should I buy 2 new fobs (either from dealer or on internet) and let dealer program/reprogram them, even if I let mech finish the job?

It is a stock (original equipment) module, as I've had no work in that area (electonics/computer module, etc) ever done on that car. But regardless of whether or not is is original equipment, your diagnosis is that the module is faulty and needs to be replaced, preferably by a dealer. Any idea of an approximate cost in parts and labor? Thanks for the help.

Would you copy and paste the previous write up? I am not seeing it under your account. What is the problem you are having?

From the sounds of it, you have an aftermarket Remote Start/Alarm system. It also sounds like the Remote Start/Alarm system Main module inside the vehicle is faulty, which would explain the headache it has been causing you. If it is a stock alarm system, I would have the dealer replace and reprogram it. If it is an aftermarket system, it is most likely faulty and either needs to be replaced, or removed. Remote Start/Alarm Systems are usually fairly dependable, but they do fail eventually because of the electronics and mechanical relays involved with such systems.

If you only have 1 key fob, I would purchase a new one and see if the problem goes away. It is possible that the key fob is worn out, since it is 11 years old. If the problem persists, then I would look into getting the computer checked and repaired. I believe the Factory Alarm is built-in to the Dodge Caravan ECM, which would require reprogramming or replacement. I am not sure how much the dealership would charge for this, but most ECMs cost anywhere from $100-$300 or more, not including the labor.
