When i put my 2005 nissan maxima in gear, it wont respond. sometimes the car will drive, but only on first gear and for a few seconds, then theres no movement at all. i checked all my fluids and there all fine. is it my transmission? or is it the gear box?

check if the relays under the dashboard are working. also ensure that the battery is well charged. check if power cables from the battery are not cut. also ensure that the replaced fuses are not blown.
I don't know exactly how the nissans work with their "limp" mode for what gear it goes into and such. This sounds like the computer is sensing a problem and going into the "limp" mode. Go get the code pulled to see what is says. If it has anything saying trans slipping or ratio problem then something internal in the the trans is wrong. Also, check the trans fluid and see if its burnt ( dark brown or black).
than yes have your transmission checked. it sounds like maybe the gears have melted togher not allowing it to go into any other gear and that when the transmission heats up it is popping or slipping out of gear.
