lights were dim and radio didnt work turned car off tried to restart and it wouldnt start key is locked in ignition

I have trouble starting it and then it turns over. Recently, I have had to jump it to start it and after driving it will not hold the charge to restart. I cleaned the battery terminals and replaced a bad terminal post but still nothing seems to help.

Won't turn over

Even though all your other electrical bits are working it could be that your battery doesn't have enough juice to crank the engine. It doesn't take much power to run the radio, lights, etc, but cranking the engine requires the battery to have a very strong charge. If your battery is more than 5 years old, that's very likely the issue. I'd start there. Also, be sure to check the battery terminals and ground for corrosion and clean if necessary. If replacing the battery doesn't solve the problem it could be the starter solenoid or a loose electrical connection somewhere.

Won't start, cleaned battery terminals, batt

Most likely it's either your selenoid or your starter. But before you buy one, have someone turn the key tro crank position while you tap the selenoid with the hammer. If it starts, you have a bad starter.

The security system (VATS/PassKey) is faulty. You can find a great write-up here: http://newrockies.ca , it was the only thing that saved my Park Avenue.

1991 cadillac eldorado, car wont turn over and makes clicking noises. How do I know if its the starter or a specific part on the starter going out? When you turn the key the headlights and dash lights,...

1st make sure your connections at battery and starter are clean and tight. Next pull the battery out and have a parts store check it's condition. Even though the lights and radio work, it may be too weak to crank the engine over. If the battery checks out ok, then you are probably correct, it's the starter. Check in this order though, so you don't waste $ on parts you don't need. You don't want to pull the starter out to find it was a weak battery, or a bad connection (dirty or loose connection would prevent jump start from working.)
