1 Answer

My car stereo does not want to turn on. Any ideas? It is still the original car radio that came with the car.

Is there anything else that does not work? Get your owners manual out and find the interior fuse panel, it will be in the console or up under the dash. In the manual or on the back of the fuse panel lid will be a legend telling you what is what. Find the fuse for the radio, pull it out and hold it up to the light. if it is burnt out, get another one of the same color, buy a box of fuses. If it is not burnt out then buy a used radio just like yours on eBay or at a local junkyard. Look on youtube for a video of someone pulling a dashboard or a radio on a 2000 (+ or -) two years Ford or Mercury. Do what they do and replace your radio. Do yourself a favor and stay with a FoMoCo radio so the wiring plug will match, and avoid radios with moving parts such as tape or CD players. They will be over 10 years old and not work anyway. If the fuse keeps blowing then there is something else on the circuit which is shorted. After you disconnect the radio from the car wiring, turn on the ignition and see if the fuse blows, if so then your radio is most likely good and you have to find and isolate the bad component on the system if you ever want to listen to the radio again.

Install new stereo

1) disconnect the negative battery cable
2) remove panel from around radio. On some models the panel is held on with screws. On others use a plastic trim tool to pry the lower part of the radio panel loose.
3) remove the radio mounting bracker screws. These are located on the side of the bracket that houses your stereo.
4) slide the radio out of the instrument panel and disconnect the wiring harness and antenna cable.
5) remove mounting brackets from radio
It may also be helpful to tag all wires before disconnecting them.
