I am having an intermittent noise problem in the rear of my 1994 Nissan 4 cyl. pickup that's sometimes quite noticeable when I am stopped, out of gear and idling. It's louder than a hum but not a roar. (high pitched electric motor sound ?). Seeing I'm at a standstill and nothing is moving in the rear, it can't be much that I am aware of other than the fuel pump or something associated. How can I determine if the fuel pump or the regulator is the culprit?
Here is how you can tell it is the fuel pump. turn your truck off. than have someone turn the ksy into the on position while they do that stand back at the end of the truck where the gas tank is located. when they key is switched to the one position thhe fuel pump should kick on and make a humming noise. if it is the same noise you hear when your ideling than that is you culprit.... my suburban does the same thing.

Okay CMV9. Any idea about how I can determine if it's the pump regulator that's actually creating the situation? My understanding is that a faulty regulator can be what actually causes the fuel pump to make abnormal noise.
When taking your advice the fuel pump sound was the normal low sound I've had for many years. Just barely audible. Normal fuel pump sound. Not like the sound that I get after usage and idling. Some times I do not even get it after normal usage. Other times I do. I do note that it's more frequent after trips of 50 - 60 miles, or more. Even then though it's not all the time. Idling in clogged traffic seems to make it more frequent too.
Okay. Thanks CMV9. I suspicioned that would be the answer.
