What you should be looking for is first, air flow. Air filter need to be clean or only a limited amount of air can get into the engine. On the other end, exhaust needs to flow freely. If the converter is plugged up or there is any restriction in a pipe or muffler, nothing will flow correctly.(a bad cat will often make a wheezing sound but not always)
Next, you need fuel. Check your pump pressure. Low idle pressure can translate into inadequate fuel delivery at high speed. If you have a carburetor on there, check the filter in the fuel inlet. you also have a filter inside the tank on the pickup tube. If injected you have a line filter and the same as before, on the pickup tube in the tank. Obviously, a worn out pump can also cause low pressure.
If you have a mass air flow sensor, check that. Also check the throttle position sensor as that, along with the MAP sensor controls ignition timing to some degree. Of course, base timing needs to be set correctly. (Older GM smallblock engines like about 6 to 8 degrees advance BTC)
Only thing that you can't test is the ignition module in the distributor. Most times when they fail, they stop working completely but I have seen a few that have partial failures that cause a variety of strange problems.

My cabrio wont start it will crank but not fire

When you squirt water on plug wires and the car stalls, that means that your plug wires are bad. PLUG WIRES (not rotor, cap, or any sensor).
Replace your spark plug wires with new, and you should be fine.

Truck stop while driving on hwy. replaced fuel pump, fuel filter, wires plugs cap rotor but still no start

Have your ignition module checked, my car would start and drive and would go dead after a few miles and would not start until it cooled down, turned out to be the ignition module that eventually went bad and would not start at all.

1985 Chevy El Camino 305ci. Turned over good but wouldn't fire. Replaced contrrol module and it started fine for about 2 months, then did the same thing. Replaced dist cap, rotor & coil. Start

Had an 84 silverado 305 that did the same thing. Try giving it a full tune up. Plugs, wires... Mine turned out to be fouled plugs. I didn't find that out till after i tore it down & put a timing set in it. Wasn't getting good enough spark.

My truck wont go over 35

Could be a lot of things I would start here. If the engine is shaking at idle or not it maybe the spark plug wires. easy way to check start the truck take a spray bottle and spray a mist on the wires to see if the truck runs worst make sure you stand back while doing this so you don't get shocked.

Exact spark plug wire placement

Turn the crankshaft till the timing mark is at 0...Check where the rotor points...if towards the back of the engine, turn one more time till it points to front. It is now at #1 on cap. Plugs are 1357 on left bank, 2468 on right. order is 18436572 in that order around cap in the direction the rotor turns when cranking.
