Question about 1993 Nissan Pickup

1 Answer

Changed the guides to my timing chain on my 93 Nissan pickup. When we put it back together the timing is off and the truck will not start. How can we adjust the timing without a timing light? Is it possible? Can we bring the first piston up to TDC and adjust the Distributor from that?

Yes but you need a repair manual for details-books are the mechanics tools also--go to parts place or online

Bought a Haynes Repair Manual. Just wanted to make sure we that it would work with just bringing #1 to TDC and adjusting the Distributor. We have no timing light.

Sonata timing chain changed now engine feels very tight, sometimes goes away but returns

Recheck the timing marks. Should have been done by hand before the engine was put back together.

Why won't my 1996 nissan pickup start after changing the oil pump

Hi Bryan, I'm Al the owner of Big As Auto Repair

Bryan, If you changed the oil pump on your 1996 Nissan Pickup and it involved removing the timing chain then I would say you did not get the timing set back up correctly and hopefully you do not have the interference engine because if you do you possibly could have bent the valves in the head. This can be costly. Here's what I need to know. Did you remove the timing chain to do the oil pump? If you did send the engine size to my website below through "Contact Us" and I'll see if your engine is a interference engine. We may be able to work together and get you out of this mess. Have an awesome day Bryan! Auto Repair

Timming chain noise

The noise your hearing is comming from an aluminum timeing chain guide on the drivers side of the timeing chain. My truck had the same problem. The noise first started when the engine was started and then within seconds went away. I drove it for about a year not knowing what the noise was comming from. A few weeks ago the noise got very loud and the truck stopped starting eventually. A few hours ago I pulled the front of the motor off to replace the timeing chain and my guid was broken right off and laying at the bottom of my oil pan. You can remove the two allen head bolts that hold this guide in place and run the vehicle without the guide. Problem solved and no more noise.

I would venture to guess that a timing chain guide broke and the chain chewed a hole thought the timing cover. The timing cover also has coolant passing through it where the water pump is attached. If you were running a multi viscosity oil, even it it were a 20-40 and got surprised by a zero degree day, I doubt seriously, it would cause that to occur. That series engine had problem s with timing chain guide failures. However, there usually is some chain rattle well before a disastrous failure. Most of my customers noticed the chain noise before it has caused catastrophic damage.
Sorry you have suffered such a loss. Good luck on your repair. A used timing cover would be the cheapest route. A place in Dallas called Bishops, buys engine cores, dismantles them, evaluates them, cleans the good parts up and sells them at very reasonable prices. They ship all over the country.
