I can't send a picture, but if you have the car on a level surface with the wheels blocked for safety, look on the driver side with the engine off while someone runs the shifter back and forth. You should see a teardrop shaped metal tab move back an forth. The part under that with wires coming out the back side will be the Park/Nuetral/reverese switch. Find a way to mark or take a picture of how the tab points before removing it, because it has to go back on the exact same way to make sure your trans knows what gear it is in.

I have dodge caravan 2004 my reverse lights are not working, fuse and bulb are good.

The linkage (column shifter or floor shifter) controls that. There is a switch somewhere in that linkage... it can even be as far down as the transmission, but you will see wires. The switch is usually out of adjustment. It could be bad, but usually it's simply an adjustment. If you need to be told the exact location, you can buy a service repair book at any auto parts store. Usually the book is made by ''Haynes.'' You can even find it online; (_maybe_ even for free... but big ''maybe'').

95 cougar stuck in park with no brake lights.already check the fuses replaced brake light switch, will not start from neutral.

Still no brake lights would indicate a bad wire. Check for power at the brake switch, repair the wire, they usually break close to the plug. This will get back the lights and shifter. The no start would be the neutral safety switch on the transmission. Usually the switch is under the shifter cable. Some have a separate switch.

My fiat punto 1.4 automatic is stuck in second gear and wont start

Hopefully it is just something in the shift linkage and not inside the transmission.
Set the parking brake and block the wheels. Check the shift linkage on the transmission and see if if something has blocked it or if it is bent. If there is nothing obvious, disconnect the linkage and see if it is stuck on the shifter side or the transmission side.
If on the shifter side, you may be able to track down the problem. If the problem is in the transmission, you may have to have a mechanic or transmission specialist take a look at it.

My transmission quit responding to all gears but park while I was driving down the road. Is it my transmission or just the cable shifter?

Is the shifter loose? Is it tight as usuall? Shift linkage will rub along the side of your transmission, usually drivers side. I'd inspect the linkage Bracket and make sure te cable is not moving around. Sometimes clips break that keep them on there. If it's not an obvious issue with the linkage I'd call a local tranny shop n ask them or some advise over the phone that you could troupe shoot yourself before having to take it in.

In my opinion transmissions are the mist difficult part of the car to diagnose, especially for the average Joe.

Hi, I have a 1996 Toyota T 100 pickup truck and it will only start when it's in drive it won't start in park or any other gear whats up with that ?

Hi, what's happened is your interlock switch has come loose or is busted. The switch is on the side of the transmission. First check the adjustment. If it's wrong, try adjusting. If this doesn't work, replace the switch. Please let me know if you have more questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

  1. Loosen the neutral start switch bolt.
  2. Place the gearshift selector lever in the N position.
  3. Align the shaft groove of the switch with the neutral Basic line. Hold the switch in this position and tighten the switch bolts on the A43D to 48 inch lbs. (6 Nm) and all others to 9 ft. lbs. (13 Nm).
  4. With the parking brake set and the brake pedal fully applied, attempt to start the engine in each shifter range. The engine should only start in N or P .

I am a owner of Ford Mustang V6 2006 Coupe. My problem is with my reversing lamp signal I have all the Time the signal with out to use the reverse gear in both side The turn the lamp is on all the...

There is a switch, usually on the side of the transmission next to the shifter linkage, that turns the backup lamps on. My guess is yours is stuck. Sometimes you can free them up, but it will stick on again, or fail all together, so your best bet is to get a new one from the parts store, and then you will know exactly what the old one looks like.

If the shifter feels loose you may have problems with the shifter linkage bushings, either next to the shifter or on the transmission itself.
If the shifter feels tight you have a problem with the clutch or an internal transmission problem.
