Question about 1992 Nissan 240SX Fastback

1 Answer

My 1993 240sx smells like gas when I drive it and it does not get good gas mileage anymore. I just had a tune-up two weeks ago and have seen little improvement. Thanks, Bridget

If you smell gas don't drive it unless you want the car to burn, gas can leak from area's, dig in and find the source, check the entire fuel system from the tank to the intake manifold, check for trouble codes and so on, there is no magic bullet to fix this.

I am thinking that it may be your fuel injectors. You may have one gone bad or the O- rings may need replacing. At least that is what the gas smell was caused by my 1990 model.

I have the smell of gas inside my 2004 Monte Carlo, it started over a week ago, no sign of gas leak and gas mileage is still good. Anyone have any ideas?

I'd use a fuel pressure gage and check correct fuel pressure. Once correct pressure builds up, see if pressure holds for a bit with everything off? If pressure drops like rock, you have a fuel pressure leak. Another thought would be evap leak?
How long since a tune-up? Any applicable trouble codes?

Broken tailpipe on 1994 altima

Hi Ahill, If it is only the tail pipe it should not affect the consumption, but you may have exhaust gas coming into the vehicle at certain speeds, so I suggest you have it seen to asap, as there is a possibility of it being dangerous. Sleeping while driving is not good for your health! Regards John

I purchased a F250 that has a 460 engine/ 4 barrel carb system in it. Do you have any suggestions on getting better gas mileage?

Tune ups on a regular basis are a must. A couple times a year check the plugs and replace if they are a little bit dirty. Also air filter. Keep the carb in tip top shape, tuned and rebuilt as necessary. Install an aftermarket vacuum guage in the dash where it is easily readable. They come marked with ranges to indicate good or poor mileage. It just plugs into the vacuum lines on the intake or carb. The more you keep it in the good range the better the mileage. Driving habits will be your best bet, keeping off the 4 barrel. Hope this helps.

My gas mileage is horrible. I fill up once a week now just running around town compared to when I use to go almost 2 weeks. Can it be a dirty filter or something?

yes dirty filter, tune up, gas additive to improve gas mileage, low tires, there are lots of things to do to improve mileage

Poor gas mileage

Do you have a gas smell in vehicle if you do there check and make sure that you are NOT loosing gas by a leak in the fuel line that was replaced or anyother part of the fuel sytem for that fact. If there is NO leak then the pressure from the pump may be too high and therefore dumping too mucj fuel into chambers but if this is true the vehicle may have a hesitation on take off or may run a little roughand a rich burning smell from exhaust, Check these things out make sure that the fuel pressure at the injector rail is correct refer to your repair manal for exact specs, because I NOT sure what it its, good luck and thanks for using FIX YA

Is Age associated with really bad gas mileage?

well to me that is not very good mileage . have you had the vehicle long ? also did it get better mileage when it was newer ? how about plugs wires etc what has been changed and tuned up ? I would think it would get better than that alot of bigger pickups get that good or better.hows your driving habits ? Jerry

i replaced my cat with a high flow cat and flowmaster 40 series exhaust about 4 years ago now. good set up on my 2.2L 4cyl 5spd. sounds excellent. the only problem, since it is a high flow cat and free flowing exhaust, there is little if any back pressure, and so i really dont have that much torque anymore. it actually made my truck slower on the bottom end. not that the 2.2L is a speed demon. lol. you could probably get away with a test pipe that is still the same size as the stock pipe and it will sound gread. as far as gas mileage, i doubt it will do anything to help. my exhaust didnt help my gas mileage any. the only thing ive noticed that got me more mileage is replacing the stock air filter with a drop in K&N filter. i got about 5 more miles a gallon just by doing that. good luck.
