1 Answer

1998 jeep wrangler.will start fine for a day or two then will not start, I leave it for a short time and it starts. I have cheched the red wire going to the coil and I'm getting no power to the coil. Also the gas gauge is not working but when I disconnet the wires from the coil and the battery then reconnect, the gauge will workfor about 10 second and then stop working again? is there some conection between the two? When the jeep is running it has never cut out on me but when going up hill it miss fires a bit. Can you help please. Thanks Gerry

Just a few things to check...... Is there oil pressure showing when you crank the motor? Some of the computer systems will cut power to the igntion system if no pressure is sensed, the sender may be faulty.
They are also known to corrode inside the battery cables which would cause many odd things, as you stated when you disconnect & reconnect the battery it works= check these good. also is the battery ok?
Another possibilty is the igntion switch is faulty. Hope this will lead you to the cause.

I need a diagram for the under hood fuse box. More importantly the specific 20 amp fuse labeled F21. What is it for. I have a 1998 jeep wrangler 4.0 4wd.

Are you sure that this is for 20AMP, according with the repair manual, the position 20 in the Power Distribution Center if for Power Motor ABS Pump, and is 10AMP.

Verify it..

Problem starting my 1998 Wrangler, occassionally

If you hear the pump running when you turn the key on, likely it's good. It can drain back while sitting overnight but so can a bad injector (testing necessary)
Two years may be a long time if wires are not good quality check them as well as cap and rotor. If fuel filter is old, it may need to be replaced.
Careful testing is important, especially with the amount of expensive electronic controls on your engine. That's why good shops invest thousands of dollars in equipment and don't employ psychics instead. The best you can do without such equipment is to determine if you have fuel and spark when it's not starting, then find out why whatever is missing isn't there.

1998 Jeep Wrangler Electrical Short in Steering Column?

I had a similar problem with my 2000 Jeep TJ and I found the problem in the wiring harness under the hood.several wires were corroded and almost burnt off.If you remove the black tape which keeps the harness bundled together and if you see evidence of "green" type powder or "gook" it's most likely where the wires have faulted.
