When you say you're having a hard time starting it does that mean it cranks over fine but it just takes a while to start or does that mean the starter is dragging when you try to start it

My 2003 ford Taurus , will start and run to when you shut it off , then does nothing for 30 minutes , starts fine.

When the problem is ongoing, if it cranks good but won't start, then have a helper crank it while you visually check for spark at the spark plugs. If spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure. Also, check fuel injector pulse. With intermittent problems, you have to test when problem is ongoing.

If the starter motor won't even crank, then have to check voltage and ground circuits for starter motor. Usually two voltage circuits for the starter, one comes from the battery, hot all the time. The other goes hot with the key in the crank position and is usually wired through the neutral or clutch switch, depending on the tranny. The starter motor grounds through the engine block. Any testing at the starter make sure tranny is in park or neutral and the parking brake is set.
Also, you security system might be causing problems, I can't be sure at the moment?

98 DODGE CARAVAN INTERMITTELY WON'T START

intermittent no start situations generally appear when you have defective crank position sensor (since it cant get idea what the crank angle is) and fuel pump issues( since it cant receive enough fuel)

Intermittent non-start. No power to starter motor

sounds like the park pawl switck assembly located in the selector assembly in the car or on the side of the transmission could just be out of adjustment

2002 Hyundai Elantra not starting intermittently

The whirring sound is more than likely your fuel pump. Give it a few seconds to build up pressure before cranking or have the pump replaced.

Hyundai Excel 97 will not start, cranks well.

I finally traced my similar problem to a broken wire into the plug going to the crank angle sensor which on this animal is located at the front of the motor on the right hand side when looking at the motor from the front. It is just below the clutch slave cylinder and is held in place by a 10mm headed bolt or phillips head (posi drive) bolt.
Good place to start.

Can anyone help with an intermittent starting issue with a '98 mercury mountaineer?

If the motor turns over, but not start. Have the "crank shaft sensor" checked/replaced Ford part# 184768 $27.98 parts $230.00 labor). I chased this problem for several years. The crank sensor finally failed completely and the mechanic was able to find the problem.
Good luck
